Daria "Dasha" Uladsimirauna Domratschawa ( Belarusian Дар'я Уладзіміраўна Домрачава , Russian Дарья Владимировна Домрачева . / Darya Vladimirovna Domratschewa, English transcription Darya Domracheva ; * 3. August 1986 in Minsk ) is a former Belarusian biathlete , the 2014 and 2018 a total of four Olympic Won gold medals.

Career

World Cup sprint in Oberhof in January 2018

Darja Domratschawa has been practicing biathlon since 1999 . The sports teacher, who lives in Minsk and Nyagan , started for the Dinamo Minsk biathlon club and was trained by Nikolai Sakharov. She made her debut at the beginning of the 2006/07 season in Östersund in the World Cup. In her third race, a sprint in Hochfilzen , she finished fifth in the top 10 for the first time. As early as 2005 in Kontiolahti , she was junior world champion in the sprint and pursuit. The following year she had to admit defeat in the pursuit in Presque Isle only Magdalena Neuner and the French Marion Blondeau and in 2007 she took silver in both sprint and pursuit. In 2008 she won silver at the Biathlon World Championships with the mixed relay.

On January 11, 2009 she drove in the lead in the mass start race of the World Cup in Oberhof for the second prone shooting. However, she shot standing and had five misses because her five hits hit the wrong targets, the standing targets. She was only able to notice this mistake when she left the shooting range because, as a right-shooter on lane 1, she had no eyes on the competitors. Because this mistake meant a possible time penalty of ten minutes, she gave up a little later. It was the first time something like this had happened to a biathlete in a World Cup mass start race. After this mishap, Domratschawa received much comfort and encouragement. All in all, the Belarusian’s performance went up steeply afterwards. In the following races she was in the top ten several times in a row. At the sprint in Ruhpolding she was third on the podium for the first time, and a week later she even finished second in the Antholz sprint.

Almost one year later to the day, Domratschawa suffered a similar mishap in Oberhof. Once again in the lead, she aimed at the two targets on the third shot from stand one, but this time noticed her mistake while shooting and was able to get at least one shot correctly. She finished the race in ninth place.

Darja Domratschawa celebrated a great sporting success at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver when she won the bronze medal in the individual. Darja Domratschawa also proved her good Olympic form with sixth place in the mass start and eighth place in the sprint. At the first World Cup after the Winter Games, Domratschawa won a World Cup race for the first time in the sprint in Kontiolahti and was able to run into first place again in the subsequent pursuit race. With a victory in the last mass start race of the following season, she secured victory in the overall standings of the mass start world cup.

In the 2011/2012 season she was the strongest competitor of the future overall World Cup winner Magdalena Neuner. Domratschawa was only able to take second place in the overall standings with six wins this season, but defended the mass start World Cup and also won the World Cup in the pursuit. Also at the World Championships in Ruhpolding Domratschawa and Neuner fought in sprint and pursuit duels for victory. In the sprint, Domratschawa had to be content with the silver medal, but was able to take first place in the pursuit.

After a sluggish start to the 2012/2013 World Cup season, Domratschawa was able to fight his way back to the podium from the World Cup in Ruhpolding. At the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město , she finally secured the gold medal in the mass start with a 9 second lead over Tora Berger . At the end of the season, as in the previous season, she finished second in the overall World Cup ranking.

At the Olympic Games in Sochi , Domratschawa wanted to get her best performance and improve in the results of Vancouver. She already proved that she was in good shape with her two World Cup victories in Oberhof , where she triumphed in the sprint and in the pursuit before the later overall World Cup winner Kaisa Mäkäräinen . But her greatest triumph should be the Olympic Games. The 9th place in the sprint race was sobering at first, in view of the fact that Domratschawa crossed the finish line with only one shooting error 32 seconds behind the faultless Kuzmina . But in the subsequent pursuit, she overtook everyone and won the Olympic gold medal. She won the second gold medal in the individual race. The Sochi mass start completed their hat trick. Domratschawa secured her third gold medal with a 20-second lead over Czech Koukalová . In her home country she was celebrated as a world star, for example stamps with her head and the three medals were printed.

In 2013, the biathlete announced the Belarusian points at the Eurovision Song Contest . After her Olympic victories, she was the first woman ever to be honored with the title Hero of Belarus and one of only eleven carriers to date . In 2015, she was named Europe's Sportswoman of the Year for the 2014 sporting year.

At the 2015 Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti , Finland , she received nothing. She had the best chance in the mass start when she had to admit defeat by the Italian Karin Oberhofer by 2.1 seconds on the home straight and reached 4th place. In Khanty-Mansiysk 2015 she made almost the same mistake as in Oberhof 2009, where she took the lead in the mass start at the 2nd shooting standing instead of lying down. In the pursuit in Khanty-Mansiysk, she also stood on the shooting mat during the second shooting. As she said herself, she noticed the mistake because of the loud audience. So she then lay down and won the persecution. With the final 4th place in the mass start, she won the overall World Cup for the first time in her career .

In the 2015/16 season Domratschawa did not start after suffering from glandular fever and then took a break because of a pregnancy. In January 2017 she made her comeback at the World Cup in Oberhof and just four months after the birth of her daughter, she won the silver medal in the pursuit at the 2017 Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen . In December she was able to celebrate her first World Cup victory in almost three years in the same place.

In the 2017/18 season Darja Domratschewa celebrated five World Cup victories and landed on 3rd place in the overall standings. At the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, she won the silver medal in the mass start and on February 22nd, with Nadseja Skardsina , Iryna Kryuko and Dsinara Alimbekawa, became the Olympic relay champion. In June 2018, she ended her career at the age of 31.

Darja Domratschawa's running style is described as elegant and extremely efficient.

Private life

On July 7, 2016, Domratschawa married the Norwegian biathlete Ole Einar Bjørndalen and gave birth to a daughter on October 1, 2016 in Minsk.
