action

Act 1

The action takes place 20 years after the events in Diablo II . The player character travels to the city of New Tristram to investigate the impact of a fallen star that is raising the dead. Leah, a local resident, also asks him to help her find her uncle Deckard Cain, who has been missing from the cathedral since the impact. After the player character has found Cain in the catacombs under the cathedral, he has to face the resurrected King Leoric and finally finds the impact crater of the star. However, it is not a meteorite, but a person who has lost his memory. To restore the stranger's memory, the player character searches for his sword, which broke when he fell. During the search the witch Magda keeps getting in his way. She seriously injures Cain and kidnaps the stranger. With his last strength, Cain joins the parts of the sword and dies. The hero chases Magda, who is hiding in Leoric's estate, to avenge his death and free the stranger. In the finale of the act, the player character defeats the butcher, but Magda escapes. After the stranger holds his sword in his hands, his memory also comes back. He is Tyrael, the Archangel of Justice, who, after destroying the World Stone in Diablo II , quarreled with the other angels of heaven about their passive attitude. He chose to become mortal in order to support the humans in their struggle and to be able to deliver a warning: Belial and Azmodan, the last of the seven powers of Hell, are preparing an invasion of the human world, Sanctuary.

Act 2

The player character travels east with Leah and Tyrael to the desert city of Caldeum to stop Belial, the Lord of Lies. On the hunt for Magda, it turns out that the city's emperor's guards are in fact Belial's demons and have captured Leah. The player character kills Magda and frees Leah. She found her mother, believed to be dead, Adria, known from Diablo . She reveals to the group that all these years they had been searching for the Black Soul Stone, an artifact that was created by the powerful Horadrimmagier Kull based on the original soul stones. Kull counted himself as one of the nephalem, a race that originated in a liaison of angels and demons who grew tired of war and created the human world as a retreat. The black soul stone has the ability to bind the essences of several demons and even angels. It was intended to grant the power of nephalem to all people, in order to ultimately subdue heaven and hell. The player character brings Kull back to life. In order to get the stone, however, the player character must then destroy Kull when he wants to win him over for his original plan at all costs. The player character also learns from him that he is a nephalem himself. He can defeat Belial and banish his essence to the Black Soul Stone, which after the destruction of the original soul stones also took in the other dead Lords of Hell: Diablo, Mephisto, Baal, Andariel and Duriel.

Act 3

Through a vision Leah realizes the plans of Azmodan, the Lord of Sin. He wants to launch his invasion of the human world from the crater of Mount Arreat. The group goes there to stop him. After successfully helping to defend the bastion that once guarded the World Stone, the player character fights through the ranks of Azmodan's demons and his generals to finally confront Azmodan after successfully traversing the Tower of the Damned and the Tower of the Cursed . Azmodan is defeated in the core of the Arreat and banished to the Black Soul Stone. During the festivities that follow, Adria and Leah disappear. Adria, who secretly worked for Diablo all the time because she has his blood in her, uses Leah as a vessel for Diablo. Combined with the power of all seven evils from the Black Soul Stone, he immediately begins an invasion of heaven in the form of Leah. He comes across Imperius, the archangel of valor. Imperius can force Diablo out of Leah's body, whereupon Diablo shows himself in his true form. Imperius tries to defend the entrance to heaven and kill Diablo, but he fails. Imperius is very badly injured. Diablo walks towards the entrance to heaven.

Act 4

The player character and Tyrael follow Diablo to heaven. This has already left a swath of death, destruction and corruption there and has conjured up a great many demons with the help of portals. The player character fights through the ranks of the demons to Diablo, who is on the way to the Silver Tower, in order to turn all creation into a hell. Just in time he can stop him and destroy him. Diablo's corpse falls into the sky, with it the Black Soul Stone. Diablo's corpse dissolves, but the Black Soul Stone does not. Tyrael takes his place again in heaven, but now as an aspect of wisdom. However, he remains a person and does not become an angel again.

Act 5 ( Reaper of Souls )

Malthael, who disappeared from heaven twenty years ago when the World Stone was destroyed, looked in the sources of wisdom for a meaning in an existence in which there was no longer a center of war between good and evil. He found his purpose in death, wherever all roads lead. So he took the black soul stone from the underground fortress in which Tyrael wanted to hide it. The player must now fight in the Gothic city of Westmark against Malthaels Lieutenant Urzael, who wants to burn the people there. After defending the city, he meets the traitor Adria in the swamps near the city, who found out where Malthael is. After the fight against them, in the ruins of past generations of nephalem, the player enters the sky again. This is attacked by Malthael to seal the gate to the battlefields of eternity. Imperius still doesn't like the player, but you get to the rugged realm where angels and demons once fought for the World Stone. After numerous fights in this unreal area, you get into the fortress of madness via a huge ram. Through a soul well, the player receives the essence of death from his ancestors, as Malthael used it. Meanwhile, Malthael tries to wipe out evil once and for all from creation and therefore wants to wipe out nephalem as well. Because they are children of angels and demons. But the player gets ahead of him and puts him in a fight in which the corrupted angel also used and destroyed the soul stone. After the fight, Tyrael sees the nephalem in a new light and Diablo's soul is released again.

Gameplay

General gameplay of the PC version

The game begins with the character creation by the player. Diablo III has a total of seven playable character classes (barbarian, witch doctor, wizard, monk, demon hunter, (and with the expansion "Reaper of Souls") crusader, (as DLC) necromancer). Unlike its predecessors, there is a female and a male avatar for each class. The talent system has been heavily revised and the player automatically receives by level climbs new active talents ( Engl. Skills ) or passive abilities. The character classes are therefore only partially comparable with the two predecessors. Furthermore, the active talents can now be linked by runes that are also automatically unlocked with level advancement, whereby the respective ability receives different bonuses. Only one (or none) of the five runes currently available per active talent can be linked. The skills can be changed at any time (however, any change is subject to a short cooldown). The player controls his character from a bird's eye view . In contrast to the two predecessors, the graphics are displayed in 3D . Diablo III retains the essential features of the user interface of its two predecessor titles.

The game is mainly designed to play together, for which a new version of Battle.net , which was already introduced for StarCraft II , serves . The group size is limited to four players. The single player mode is only a limitation to one player who has the option of making the current game permanently accessible to other players. This also means that a player in multiplayer mode is able to pass the game alone. The game adapts to the number of players in the group, making the opponents stronger. In the second version of Battle.net, security against fraudsters is to be significantly improved.

So-called healing balls, which are usually more familiar from jump-'n'-run games, have been introduced. In addition, as in the first part of the quests created the main story also randomly generated side quests, while the second is always the same quests had to be solved. Furthermore, the death of a character in Diablo III no longer leads to a loss of experience. Instead, the equipment loses 10% of its durability and therefore costs gold to repair. As in the predecessor, the player can hire companions to support him in single player mode. After completing the corresponding quests, he has a templar, a villain or an enchantress at his disposal, as long as only one player is present.

Also known from its predecessor, Diablo III offers a hardcore mode as soon as a character has been increased to level 10 in normal mode. Hardcore characters cannot be resuscitated after death and their equipment (unlike its predecessor) is lost. There is also a separate auction house for hardcore mode and hardcore characters can only play in groups with one another. What is new in this game mode is that deceased characters can be included in a personal hall of fame for fallen heroes.

In the course of the first two acts, the player can unlock two craftsmen - an armorer and a jeweler - who can then be trained further. Just like the personal treasure chest, from the first activation all characters of the player share the same blacksmith and jeweler, who are available for new characters from the beginning. There is only a separation between the normal game mode and the hardcore mode. To access the craftsmen in hardcore mode, they have to be unlocked one more time.

development

On June 28, 2008, Blizzard Entertainment announced the third part of the series at the World Wide Invitational in Paris. In September 2011, Blizzard started a closed beta test. On April 23, it was finally made available to all interested players. On May 15, 2012 the game was released worldwide for Windows PC and Mac OS. Diablo III came on the market uncut in Germany with a USK rating from 16 years of age.

Diablo III uses a self-developed 3D graphics engine , and a self-developed physics engine provides environmental effects . The player can move, demolish and use objects standing around and natural conditions in an even more realistic way.

An originally announced new player-versus-player (PvP) mode was removed from the game shortly before the game was released. In December 2012, the developers announced that the PvP mode would not meet their requirements for a high-quality Blizzard experience in the course of further development and in-house presentation. A modified PvP mode was delivered with version 1.0.7.14633 on February 12, 2013 (America) and February 13, 2013 (Europe).

About a month before the release of Diablo III , Blizzard announced some changes to the real money auction house of Diablo III , in which players can buy items of the game with either the in-game currency gold or real money: For example, an upper limit for the available balance on one has been set Battle.net account of a maximum of 250 euros and transactions can only be carried out up to a value of 1,500 euros per day. If players want to top up their account with more than 100 euros, they are also forced to use an authenticator, which is available either as a separate device or as a smartphone app.

The real money auction house finally opened on June 12, 2012, and a little later in America on June 15. The real money auction house, on the other hand, did not exist in the version for South Korea , as such a version would have been in conflict with South Korean anti-gambling laws.

Console versions

Because of the great success of the game, Blizzard Entertainment said it was interested in releasing the game on consoles from an early age. A team explored the possibilities. The console version was developed by its own team, which, however, worked very closely with the PC team. In June 2013, the game was announced to be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 3, 2013.

A version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released on August 19, 2014 together with the expansion Diablo III: Reaper of Souls .

An implementation for the Nintendo Switch will follow on November 2, 2018 .

Sales versions

Diablo III is available in stores as a standard version and as a Collector's Edition . The standard version is also available as a download version. In addition to the full version of the game, the Collector's Edition also offers a 4 GB USB stick in the soul stone design , on which the full version of the predecessor Diablo II and its expansion Diablo II: Lord of Destruction are located. The Collector's Edition also includes a soundtrack for the game, a “look behind the scenes” on Blu-ray Disc and DVD , an art book , a Diablo skull, a pet (fetish shaman) for World of Warcraft , portraits for StarCraft II and glowing angel wings as well as an exclusive banner for Diablo III .

Reaper of Souls (expansion)

On August 14, 2013, Blizzard published a website entitled Reaper of Souls , which was interpreted by the trade press as an indication of an expansion. On August 21, 2013, the expansion Diablo III: Reaper of Souls was officially confirmed at a press conference at the Gamescom game fair . The extension was released on March 25, 2014.

In addition to a sixth class, the crusader, the expansion also added a new fifth act, as well as the new maximum level 70 and new monsters. Due to some patches, new content was continuously imported. For example the realm of the Baroness Gier, which can be reached through portals of treasure goblins. The ruins of the city of Sescheron, which was overrun by Baal in Diablo 2 shortly before Act 5, have also been added. Here the player finds a powerful artifact Kanais cube ( Kanai's Cube ) , and meets the body of the barbarian chief Kanai. (This was named after a late Blizzard employee.) From there it goes into the eternal forests of the Jetis. The Gray Depth Island, which hides a secret about the demoness Nereza, has been added off the coast of West Mark.

Season mode

With version 2.1 the season mode was added. A season usually lasts 90–100 days. During this time, a new hero can be created as a seasonal hero. This can replay the storyline or explore the adventure mode. Special seasonal goals can be met. Certain seasonal objectives reward the player with unique, cosmetic items such as wings, pets or flags. After the season, the season hero is converted into a normal hero. Seasonal characters do not share the box of loot with normal heroes. This also applies to seasonal hardcore characters. With the conversion to a normal hero, all items received during the season are transferred to the normal environment via mail.

Return of the Necromancer

The seventh grade for Diablo III , the necromancer , appeared on June 27, 2017. This was made available as a download in the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 4 and in the Microsoft Store for the Xbox One .

Diablo III received mostly good reviews. The Süddeutsche Zeitung rated the tactical system of character development as much more complex than in its predecessor. Der Spiegel described the game as "colorful, loud and fairly simple, but still successful". The online compulsion introduced as a DRM measure for the single player mode was also criticized. The online requirement in combination with the server availability problems ( Error 37 ) shortly after the publication was cited as the main reason for the poor user ratings at Metacritic of 3.7 out of 10 points (as of May 15, 2012). The fact that Diablo III could lead the way in the acceptance of online compulsory for other game releases was criticized as a more far-reaching potential impact. The planned PvP mode and the controversial real money auction house were also not available for publication, but Blizzard promised to provide both in a timely manner via patches. The real money auction house then became available for most regions on June 12, 2012.

Commercial win

According to the publisher Activision-Blizzard, the game was sold 3.5 million times on its first day of sale, making it the most successful PC game launch to date. In addition, there were 1.2 million players who had received a free full version of the game as a bonus by purchasing an annual subscription to Blizzard's MMORPG World of Warcraft . In the first week of sales, the number of players rose to 6.3 million. Within the next two months, however, the number of active players fell again by around ⅔, as suggested by analyzes by chat client manufacturer Xfire and the Korean research institute Gametrics. By August 2013, the Windows implementation had been sold twelve million times.

Warning from German consumer advocates

The middle June 2012 urged German consumer protection by the consumer center Bundesverband eV (vzbv) manufacturer Blizzard for Diablo III from. They criticized the fact that the package was missing information about the required, permanent internet connection as well as the multiple login to Battle.net necessary to play. Furthermore, buyers of the game were denied access to the product due to technical problems such as error 37, because the provider had not fulfilled its obligation to provide sufficient server capacity. The vzbv asked Blizzard to sign a cease and desist declaration and to adapt the information on the game packaging accordingly.

Criticism of the real money auction house

The real money auction house for Diablo III , which opened in mid-June 2012, gave players the opportunity to offer the items they had collected in the game for a fee or to purchase items themselves. There was criticism for this already after the announcement of these plans in the run-up to the publication, especially since Blizzard had taken extensive action against commercial offers and suppliers of in-game items or in-game currency with regard to its own MMORPG World of Warcraft . With the real money auction house, the company has now made this commercial use possible itself and earns money from it through the due commission. Among other things, voices have been raised that see such ideas as harmful to game development, as they can lead other providers to follow suit. This would partly endanger the balance, especially in the games that contain a PvP mode, as was announced for Diablo III . Thus, in the game with the use of real money, clear advantages could also be achieved over other players. Blizzard responded to this criticism with a reference to the matchmaking system, which should always assign players equally strong opponents. An improvement in equipment only causes the assigned opponents to become stronger.

Along with the appearance of Reaper of Souls , on March 18, 2014, Blizzard removed the auction house (both real money and play money) from the game.
