The División de Honor (chess) 1998 was the fourth season of the División de Honor and at the same time the 42nd Spanish team championship in chess , it was played with ten teams. The champions were the team of CA Epic-Barcino Terrassa, which was created from the merger of the defending champion CE Barcino Barcelona with Epic Terrassa. UE Foment Martinenc Barcelona and CA Endesa Ponferrada were promoted from the Primera División. Both newly promoted players achieved relegation, while CE Vulcà-Speed ​​Sound Barcelona, ​​EM El Olivar Zaragoza and CA Centro Goya Villa de Teror had to relegate.

mode

The ten participating teams played a simple round-robin tournament . The last three were relegated to the Primera División and were replaced by the promoted from the Primera División. The game was played on four boards, the number of board points (one point for a win, half a point for a draw, no point for a defeat), then the number of team points (two points for a win, one point) decided the placement for a tie, no point for a loss).

The tournament was held in Salamanca from September 5th to 13th .

Season course

Practically all decisions had already been made before the last lap. CA Epic-Barcino Terrassa had 2.5 board points and 4 team points ahead of UGA Barcelona and could even have afforded a narrow defeat. CE Vulcà-Speed ​​Sound Barcelona and CA Centro Goya Villa de Teror were already relegated, and EM El Olivar Zaragoza could only have saved a 4-0 win while CA Endesa Ponferrada lost 4-0 at the same time.
