The Division 2 1996/97 was the 58th staging of the second highest French football league . It was a league with only professional teams.
The game was played from August 11, 1996 to May 30, 1997. La Berrichonne Châteauroux was second division champion .
societies
The 15 clubs that had not been promoted to the first division or relegated to the third division (national) or lower after the previous season were eligible to participate ; there were also three first division relegated and four promoted from the national . Thus, the following 22 teams played for the division 2 championship this season :
- two from the north (promoted AS Beauvais , SC Amiens )
- three from the Paris region and the Champagne-Ardenne ( AS Red Star , OFC Charleville , Association Troyes AC )
- three from the northeast ( SAS Épinal , FC Mulhouse , FC Sochaux )
- four from the northwest ( Stade Laval , Le Mans UC , promoted Stade Briochin , FC Lorient )
- three from the center ( LB Châteauroux , CS Louhans-Cuiseaux , relegated FC Gueugnon )
- one from the southwest ( Chamois Niort )
- six from the southeast (relegated AS Saint-Étienne , USJOA Valence , Toulouse FC , FC Perpignan , relegated FC Martigues , promoted Sporting Toulon )
This time only the top two clubs were directly eligible for promotion, because the first division was to be reduced to 18 participants. The four relegated members were replaced by only two third division promoters.
Season course
Each team played a return match against each group opponent, once in front of their own audience and once away. The three-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement; if there was still identity - as was the case this season between Mulhouse and Red Star - the higher number of hits decided the better place in the table.
Châteauroux and Toulouse had already been able to break away from their main pursuers, the two first division relegated Martigues and Gueugnon, several match days before the end of the season, and the team from Niort, which got into the games surprisingly well, could ultimately no longer keep up with the later promoted players. The newly promoted Beauvais also had a good season in seventh place in the final table, while Saint-Étienne, France's "superstructure" of the 1960s and 1970s, barely escaped the fate of being "passed" straight from the first to the third division. However, the season was again characterized by massive financial difficulties for some clubs; Promoted Saint-Brieuc withdrew his team completely before the last quarter of the season, regardless of the 38 points he had already won, while Perpignan and Charleville played their games completely, but were subsequently declared insolvent in court and gave up their professional status. League newcomer ATAC from Troyes benefited from this , which only remained in Division 2 because of this .
In the 451 matches actually played, 999 hits were scored; this corresponds to an average of 2.2 goals per game. The most successful goalscorer and thus the winner of the league's top scorer's crown was Samuel Michel from FC Sochaux with 23 goals. For the following season four relegated from Division 1 ( SM Caen , AS Nancy , OSC Lille and OGC Nice ) were added; This time only two teams rose from the third highest league with Olympique Nîmes and ES Wasquehal .
