Duncan Hamilton (born April 30, 1920 in Cork , † May 13, 1994 in Sherborne , Dorset ) was a British racing driver and Le Mans winner.
Career
The bearded Hamilton belonged to that type of vehicle -Werkstattbesitzern that enthusiastic populated the British and European motor sport scene in 1945 in droves. During the Second World War he had flown a Westland Lysander for the Royal Air Force , thereby proving his versatility in mastering sophisticated technical equipment.
After the opening of Formula 1 in the 1950 season , he tried five races in the following three years, three times each at the Heimgrandprix in Silverstone and once each at the Grand Prix of Germany and the Netherlands behind the wheel of a Talbot Lago , and later with an HWM - Alta . His best place was a 12th place at the Silverstone Grand Prix with a Talbot. In all other races, technical defects such as clutch and engine damage or a defective oil pump forced him to give up.
Thereupon he decided to say goodbye to the monoposto scene and to turn more to the sports car races , where in 1953 he was able to victoriously finish the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Jaguar C-Type at the side of his friend Tony Rolt , which some excellent Athletes of that era were denied despite various attempts.
Duncan had meanwhile settled in Surrey and in 1959 wanted to open a Jaguar dealership together with his close friend Mike Hawthorn , the Formula 1 world champion of the previous year, when he had a fatal accident with his private car at Guildford in January .
