As in the previous year, the participating teams played a single round, so that each club played a home and an away game against the other teams. At the end of the season, the league champions had the chance to move up to the top division in a relegation round against the bottom of the Bundesliga . The last placed, however, had to play in a relegation round against the champions of the newly introduced group league for his place in the top division.
