Results of the referendum in Schleswig in 1920

Voting result in the first and second zone
Division of the zones, the third zone in southern Schleswig was later deleted

The Treaty of Versailles , ratified by Germany on July 16, 1919 , provided for the resolution of the border issue between Denmark and Germany through a referendum in Schleswig ( Sønderjylland ) according to Articles 109–114 . The voting area included the northern districts of the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein , the districts Hadersleben , Tondern , Aabenraa , Sonderburg , Flensburg , the city of Flensburg and a small part of the district of Husum . The voting area was divided into two zones, the border of which was the so-called Clausen line . This was a borderline that the Danish geographer and population statistician Hans Victor Clausen had proposed in 1891 as the desired border between Germany and Denmark. As a result, parts of the districts of Tondern and Flensburg were divided between the two voting zones. The Hadersleben, Aabenraa, Sonderburg districts and the northern parts of the Tondern and Flensburg districts formed zone 1. The city of Flensburg, the sub-area of the Husum district and the southern parts of the Flensburg and Tondern districts formed the second zone. The vote in the first zone took place on February 10, 1920. The vote in the second zone followed due to the majority for Denmark in zone 1 on March 14, 1920.

The places or parishes are shown here with their German names if possible, the Danish name is added in brackets.

Therefore both the result of zone 1 and the parish overall result are given for the parish construction. The parts of these two municipalities voted as separate voting districts in the 2nd zone, but were awarded to Denmark when the border was determined, although they all had German majorities.
2 The municipality of Fröslee was divided by the voting limit. Fröslee belonged to the parish Handewitt, the majority of which was in the 2nd zone.
3 The municipality of Hönschnap belonged politically to the district of Flensburg-Land, but ecclesiastically to the parish of Holebüll, the majority of which belonged to the district of Aabenraa.
