About this picture

Eschbach is a municipality in the Markgräflerland in southwest Baden-Württemberg and is located about 15 kilometers south of Freiburg im Breisgau in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district .

geography

Eschbach is located in the Upper Rhine Plain between the Upper Rhine in the west and the Black Forest in the east, between Bad Krozingen in the north and Heitersheim in the south. The Eschbach flows through Eschbach .

history

The town of Ascabah was first found in a document in 807. Over the centuries, various monasteries owned Eschbach, such as the St. Gallen , St. Blasien and St. Trudpert monasteries , which gave it to noble families as fiefs. In 1368 Eschbach and the entire Breisgau became part of Upper Austria . In the following 400 years, the Lords of Rappoltstein (1500–1613) and the Order of St. John (1613–1806) , among others, exercised the authority . In 1806 the community was then added to the Grand Duchy of Baden . Eschbach belonged to the district office of Staufen (1919) came via the district of Müllheim (1936) to today's district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald (1973).

Religions

Eschbach has always been a Roman Catholic community. The Church of St. Agnes was first mentioned in 1275. The few Protestant believers belong to the Protestant parish of Heitersheim .

In 1900, on the recommendation of the General State Archives, the municipality adopted today's coat of arms, which refers to historical rulers. The Johanniterkreuz can be found in the coat of arms of the Lords of Rappoltstein.

Administration union

Eschbach is a member of the cross- border local special purpose association Mittelhardt-Oberrhein , which promotes cross-border communal cooperation between municipalities in Alsace and Baden on the basis of the Karlsruhe Convention .

Culture and sights

Buildings

Weinstetten estate

Weinstetter Hof

The oldest surviving building in Eschbach is the manorial estate Weinstetten north of the Weinstetten desert , which now belongs to Eschbach. The abandoned village of Weinstetten was first mentioned in a document in 896 under the name Vizzilistat. It was almost completely destroyed by the Rhine flood of 1482. Only the manorial farm in the north of the village, which was sold in 1271 by the Lords of Üsenberg to the Johanniter von Freiburg, remained.

St. Agnes

Prince Grand Prior von Rosenbach built the manor house around 1606 . The Weinstetter Hof is now owned by the Heinrich Schmid painters' workshop and has been restored. It is open to the public at events such as open-air concerts or the Advent market.

Saint Agnes

Cemetery chapel

The first St. Agnes Church is today's cemetery chapel. The early Romanesque bell tower probably dates from the 11th century. During excavations at the end of the 19th century, the remains of the Romanesque nave from the 10th or 11th century came to light. In the 13th century, the round arched windows were converted into pointed arched windows, and the choir and sacristy room were added. In 1468 the building was assigned to Saint Agnes of Rome for the first time . In 1517 the church was renovated and the walls painted, as can still be seen in the choir today. From the 17th century it became dilapidated and in danger of collapsing, so it had to be propped up.

In 1885 the construction of the new St. Agnes Church began on the other side of the railway, which was consecrated in 1888. In the same year, the nave of the old parish church was demolished, the tower and choir were to follow, because the community shied away from the cost of maintenance. The building authority considered the tower to be worth preserving and so the municipality negotiated with the Baden state that it pays for the maintenance of the tower and that it receives the choir. So the cemetery was allowed to stay at this point and the former choir serves as a cemetery chapel today. At times it was also used by the Protestant community.

Eschbacher Castell

Eschbacher Castell

The most distinctive building in Eschbach is the noble house from the 14th century. It is a three-story mansion with a towering structure that can be seen from afar. From 1795 it was operated as an inn under the name Zum Löwen . During renovation measures in 1999, renovation and extension phases came to light, as well as the former tower of the “Brennerin”. The noble house was named Eschbacher Castell . Since December 2018, the historic building has been the municipality's town hall.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

In the meantime, over 170 companies have settled in the intermunicipal industrial park Breisgau. Among other things , Cewe produces photo books there. In addition to the Hartheim / Heitersheim motorway junction and the airfield, the industrial park has a rail connection to the Rhine Valley Railway in the area of the Heitersheim station.

education

In Eschbach there is a primary school , the “Rappoltsteiner Schule” , and the community also has two kindergartens, St. Anna and Noah's Ark, which are run by the community.

traffic

Eschbach, Bremgarten airfield

Eschbach is close to the federal motorway 5 . The place can be reached via the motorway exit 64b ( Hartheim - Heitersheim -Eschbach) through the Breisgau industrial park.

Eschbach is cut up by the Karlsruhe – Basel Rhine Valley Railway , which also makes a relatively tight curve in the village, the Eschbacher Bogen , which forces the trains to brake to less than 100 km / h. Since it is an ICE route, a softening of the curve has been discussed for decades and, if implemented, would mean an intervention in the local building fabric.

In addition, the 2003 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan provided for the four-track expansion of the Rhine Valley Railway by 2016, the planned and actual time of completion of the Gotthard Base Tunnel . The two new tracks, which according to the previous plan should be reserved for freight traffic, are to be built about 1.5 km west between Eschbach and the industrial park through the open landscape to the A5. The documents for the plan approval procedure of this section 8.4 are to be adapted by the railway from 2017 [out of date] .

Eschbach itself no longer has its own train station, which is due to the proximity of the Heitersheim train station, which is only about 1.5 km away. The connection with public transport is guaranteed by the Südbadenbus Gesellschaft (SBG) .

The former air force base and today's civil special airfield Bremgarten airfield is located in the intermunicipal industrial park Breisgau, which is mostly on the Eschbacher district .
