The 1996/97 Bundesliga was the seventh season of the women's Bundesliga. Master was green and white Brauweiler with a victory on penalties against FC Rumeln-Kaldenhausen . It was the last season in which the Bundesliga was divided into two groups.

Season course

The 1996/97 season was not just about the championship and relegation, but also about qualifying for the new, single-track Bundesliga. So the season remained exciting for the teams from midfield until the last matchday.

In the north, Grün-Weiß Brauweiler was again the season winner with one point ahead of FC Rumeln-Kaldenhausen . For the defending champion from Siegen, who competed for the first time under the name Sportfreunde , only third place remained. Nevertheless, like the fourth Eintracht Rheine, they moved directly into the single-track Bundesliga. Potsdam, Hanover, Schmalfeld and Wolfsburg had to go into relegation, while the narrowly beaten promoted team from Wildeshausen had to return to the regional league as well as Tennis Borussia Berlin .

In the south, FSV Frankfurt once again dominated at will. The only blemish was the 0-0 at the relegated from Sindelfingen. Otherwise every game was won. The local rival from Praunheim was runner-up. TuS Niederkirchen and VfR 09 Saarbrücken qualified directly for the single-track Bundesliga . The latter joined 1. FC Saarbrücken after the season . TSV Crailsheim , the surprisingly strong promoted team SC Sand , Klinge Seckach and promoted Schwarzbach had to be relegated . For this the veteran VfL Sindelfingen and the TuS Ahrbach had to relegate.

In the semifinals, both northern clubs got the upper hand. While Brauweiler reached a draw in the second leg after a 4-2 win in Praunheim, Rumeln had to make up a 2-1 deficit, which was achieved with a 3-1 win in the second leg. The final was a very exciting affair. After 90 minutes it was a goalless draw. Shortly after the start of extra time, Inka Grings put the Rumeln team in the lead. Three minutes before the final whistle, Brauweiler managed to equalize by amounting to equalize. In the penalty shootout, Brauweiler had better nerves. The decision was made when Daniela Arndt from Rumeln missed her penalty. Claudia Klein converted her penalty and Brauweiler was German champion after losing three finals.

For the relegation to the last four places in the single-track Bundesliga, four groups of four teams each were formed. Only the group winners had their place in the new class. SSV Turbine Potsdam and SC Klinge Seckach managed to stay in the league via relegation . In terms of sport, Fortuna Sachsenroß Hannover also managed to stay in the league. For financial reasons, they renounced the Bundesliga and continued in the district league. In return, Hamburger SV moved up. The only sporty climber was the SC 07 Bad Neuenahr .
