The Verbandsliga Schleswig-Holstein was held for the 44th time in the 1990/91 season and formed the substructure of the third-class Oberliga Nord. The two first-placed teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord. The teams in the last three places had to relegate to the national league.

Compared to the 1989/90 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: Eutin 08 was in the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The three relegated members had left the association league and were replaced by the four promoted Eckernförder SV ( promotion after seven years), Itzehoer SV ( promotion after one season), SV Eintracht Segeberg and TSG Concordia Schönkirchen (both in the highest amateur league in Schleswig-Holstein for the first time) .

Season course

VfB Kiel secured the championship and participation in the promotion round. TSV Pansdorf was also allowed to take part in second place. Both ended their group in last place and missed the climb. Since Eutin 08 was relegated from the Oberliga Nord at the same time, there were four relegated teams. TSG Concordia Schönkirchen and Eckernförder SV had to leave the association league after one season, TSV Kappeln after three seasons and TSB Flensburg after five years.
