After a win against Serbia and a draw against Australia, the Ghanaians had a good chance of progressing. One more point against group favorites Germany would have been enough to safely progress. But although the team just lost 1-0 to the Germans, they stayed in second place in the preliminary round table, as neither Australia nor Serbia could exploit it in a direct comparison. Ghana is the only African representative who was able to reach the round of 16 at the first World Cup on their own continent.
