Group games

In Group B, the New Zealanders faced the third of the 2010 Asian Women's Football Championship, Japan . Japan already took the lead after four minutes, but Amber Hearn equalized in the 12th minute after a successful cross into the six-yard box. After that, the Ferns were able to withstand the attack efforts of the Japanese women for a long time. It wasn't until the 68th minute that Aya Miyama scored the 2-1 winner for Japan with a directly converted free kick from the edge of the penalty area. The New Zealanders then lacked the strength to fight for the balance. It was the fourth defeat - in a draw - against Japan in the fifth game. In addition, it was the seventh consecutive World Cup defeat for New Zealand, which set the negative record for Denmark .

In the second game, the Ferns met runner-up European champions England . The English initially had more of the game and New Zealand hardly came near the English penalty area. All the more surprising then, the 1-0 for New Zealand fell in the 18th minute by Sarah Gregorius . After that, the Ferns were allowed to dream of their first victory at a World Cup for a long time, because the English women couldn't think of much against the compact defense of the New Zealanders, who also lurked on counterattack. It wasn't until the 63rd minute that Jill Scott managed to equalize after a cross from the right with a header. After that, the Ferns pushed for another opening goal and had some good opportunities. In their urge phase then fell the 2-1 winner for the English women by Jessica Clarke in the 81st minute. The English women then knew how to bring the result over time. With this first defeat in the second game against England (the first ended 0-0), New Zealand was eliminated early and now has the longest negative series with eight defeats in a row.

The last game was against Mexico , the runner-up in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup against which New Zealand had only played once and lost 5-0. Mexico could still qualify for the quarter-finals with a big win against New Zealand - if England lost against Japan - if they achieved a better goal difference than England. Accordingly, Mexico entered the game with great enthusiasm and made it 1-0 after just two minutes through Stephany Mayor . New Zealand were shocked and struggled to get into the game. Only in the 26th minute there was a first opportunity to score, but the Mexican goalkeeper thwarted it. In the 29th minute, she initiated the 2-0 for Mexico with a wide kick, which Maribel Domínguez scored single-handedly after a header extension at the center line. The Ferns pushed for the connection in the second half, but their efforts were only rewarded in the 90th minute when Rebecca Smith made it 2-1. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Hannah Wilkinson also equalized. This ended New Zealand's negative series of eight games without winning points. Since England won against Japan, this draw was also irrelevant for Mexico.
