history

The place Doberschau was first mentioned in 1223 in the Upper Lusatian border document. South of Doberschau is located on the River Spree , the Doberman showers Schanze , formerly known as Wallenburg served the inhabitants as a refuge. It could be defended well because it is bordered to the north by the steeply sloping and rocky valley of the Spree. Remains of the wall can still be seen today. According to the stories, an underground tunnel from the ski jump to the former manor in Doberschau should have existed. Whether the hill can be identified with the castellum Trebista , first mentioned in 1007 , is controversial. The 1000th anniversary of the site in 2007 was based on this mention.

During the Reformation there was a long-standing dispute over the parish of Gaussig. The place was owned by the Catholic cathedral monastery of Bautzen , but the right to present the pastor's position was held by the Protestant pastor of Göda . The latter was supported by the Saxon Elector , to whose territory Göda, but not Gaussig, belonged since 1559. The Protestants were finally able to prevail in the 1560s .

Since the municipal council election on May 26, 2019 , the seats of the municipal council have been distributed among the individual groups as follows:

Since the AfD was entitled to four mandates based on the number of votes, but it only had one candidate, the new municipal council only has 13 instead of a possible 16 seats.

The last mayoral elections took place on April 10, 2016. After the long-time incumbent Michael Schulze (CDU) no longer ran, Alexander Fischer (CDU), who narrowly missed the absolute majority in the first ballot, was elected his successor in the second with 59.9% of the votes. The turnout was 49.8%.

Warning sign on the premises of the explosives plant Gnaschwitz

The Gnaschwitz district is best known for the Gnaschwitz explosives factory , which still produces explosives for civil and military use around the world. Here, in the sixties, large underground facilities were created in the predominantly granite subsoil, in which production and storage took place.

There were also several accidents here - mostly due to human error - and the resulting pressure waves could spread several kilometers in the Spreetal. During the GDR era, tests of the explosives took place on the company premises every Wednesday afternoon and could be heard from afar.

Attractions

Church at the castle park

In Gaussig, there is Schloss Gaussig , a Palladian-style baroque palace with a rhododendron park . The castle was owned by the imperial counts Schall-Riaucour until 1945 , during the land reform they were expropriated and deported to a collection camp in Rügen . After the castle was used as a vacation home for the TU Dresden in GDR times , it was then renovated and used for private purposes, from August 2008 also as a castle hotel. The park is still accessible. There is a Roman Catholic chapel at the castle. From 1895 to 1998 the famous winged altar from 1471 was located here, which was originally located in the local Protestant parish church until it was rebuilt in 1874 by Carl August Schramm, Zittau. Due to the lack of evidence that the altar had been transferred to the castle, the Protestant pastor brought the altar back from the Catholic chapel to the Protestant church before the movable inventory was returned to the former owner of the castle who was entitled to use it.
