Georg Eder (born March 6, 1928 in Mattsee ; † September 19, 2015 there ) was Archbishop of Salzburg from 1989 to 2002 .

Life

Georg Eder was born in 1928 on the Gräblerbauernhof in Mattsee in the northern Salzburg Flachgau region. In 1946 he entered the archbishop's grammar school Borromäum in Salzburg and passed the Matura there after five years . Georg Eder then entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Salzburg . On July 15, 1956 Georg Eder received in Salzburg Cathedral by Archbishop Andreas Rohracher the priesthood . He was a chaplain in Zell am See and was appointed episcopal secretary in 1960. In the next few years Eder continued his theological studies and completed them in 1964 with Josef Dillersberger with a biblical dissertation on the work of the Holy Spirit in Joh 14 .

In 1965 Eder became pastor of Lofer , at the same time he was active as an altar boy chaplain for the archdiocese. From 1968 to 1970 he was Secretary General responsible for matters relating to the Tyrolean part of the Archdiocese in Wörgl . In 1970 he became pastor of Altenmarkt im Pongau , and from 1981 to 1889 dean of the Altenmarkt dean's office .

On December 21, 1988, the cathedral chapter of Salzburg elected Georg Eder from a triple proposal by the Holy See as the 88th successor of St. Rupert of Salzburg and 77th Archbishop of Salzburg. He was appointed by Pope John Paul II on January 17, 1989. His predecessor, Archbishop Karl Berg , donated his episcopal ordination on February 26 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Johann Weber , Bishop of Graz-Seckau , and Jakob Mayr , Auxiliary Bishop in Salzburg. On August 15, 1989, the solemn investiture with the pallium took place in Salzburg Cathedral , presented by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as the representative of the Holy Father .

In January 2002, Eder compared official measures taken by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture under Monika Hohlmeier (CSU) against individual members of the Auerbach school sisters with the actions of the Nazi regime and admitted in the same text that he had “had good experiences” with the Engelwerk , which critics classified as a sect ( see also main article ) .

On November 23, 2002 Eder's resignation for health reasons was accepted by Pope John Paul II; he was Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until January 10, 2003, when Alois Kothgasser succeeded him.

Archbishop Georg Eder's grave

After his death on September 19, 2015, senior archbishop Eder was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral on September 26 . His successors Kothgasser and Lackner led the funeral service . In accordance with Eder's testamentary wishes, the sermon was given by Salzburg's auxiliary bishop Andreas Laun , and there was no floral decoration or the traditional funeral procession through Salzburg's old town .

Act

Eder convened the diocesan forum, which met from 1994 to 1996, in order to promote dialogue within the church and to ensure unity with the general church. Eder's assessment of this synodal process was positive: this meeting had “brought the Church a lot of good fruit” and it was “a real day of joy”; but he also left no doubt that there was still much work to be done.

A particular concern of Eder was the promotion of priestly vocations as well as marriage and family. Due to his pointedly conservative views on sexual morality , ecumenism and the social and church values, he was regularly the focus of media interest. On June 19, 1998, he was able to welcome Pope John Paul II as a guest in Salzburg.

Georg Eder was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . In 1990, as Archbishop of Salzburg, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Cardinal Caprio and invested in Salzburg Cathedral on March 15, 1990 by Gebhard Koberger CanReg , Grand Prior of the Austrian Lieutenancy .
