Oberneukirchen is located at an altitude of 774 m in the upper Mühlviertel . The community belonged to the Leonfelden judicial district until 2012 and has been part of the Rohrbach judicial district since January 1, 2013 . The extension is 10.9 km from north to south and 6.4 km from west to east. The total area is 34.64 km².

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 13th century . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

The settlement-like and finally village life in the area of ​​the community Oberneukirchen probably began in the 12th century . The expansion and settlement of the cleared forest areas and the religious support of the settlers soon made it necessary to build a chapel or church. According to earlier historians, there was first a “chapel dedicated to St. Maria and Ottilia ”(1292), then a“ Chapel in honor of St. Cäcilia ”(1475) and finally (the then naturally smaller) initial form of the St. James parish church, enlarged from 1899–1901 to its present form .

In 1220 the Waxenberg lordship , to which this area belonged, came to the Austrian Babenberg dukes. In 1242 Frederick II donated the parish of Gramastetten (and thus also the area of ​​Oberneukirchen) to Wilhering Abbey. On November 28, 1292 Oberneukirchen became a branch parish of Leonfelden. In this document the place was mentioned for the first time as Newnkhirchen (Neukirchen). It was not until the second half of the 14th century that the name Oberneukirchen became common in order to clearly differentiate the market from the other Neukirchen ( Gallneukirchen , Pabneukirchen and Niederneukirchen in the Linz Land district).

1356 Neukirchen appears as a market in the so-called Wallsee partition contract.

The Oberneukirchen school was first mentioned in 1522. On February 4, 1560, Emperor Ferdinand I was awarded the market coat of arms . As early as 1500, agriculture and weaving were the main sources of income. The trade in flax and linen was also very important , but also in wood, wine and salt.

In 1595 Oberneukirchen became an independent parish; In 1589 a citizens' hospital was built.

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.

The years 1809 (invasion of French troops), 1864 (Markt) and 1911 (Galgenbühel) were marked by large fires, which destroyed many buildings.

On November 1, 1938, the communities Oberneukirchen, Waxenberg and Waldschlag merged to form the market town of Oberneukirchen.

music

The community of Oberneukirchen is home to two brass bands. The Musikverein Oberneukirchen provides the background music for many festive occasions in Oberneukirchen. In Traberg, eight kilometers away, there is also a brass band, the Traberg Music Association.

Regular events

The "Schnopfistadel" is a cultural meeting point for numerous events. The Traberg theater group has been holding a carnival session during the carnival season since 2013. Since 2014, it has been held every two years, alternating with the Traberg music club's ball.

In summer the FF Amesschlag organizes a large fire brigade tent party.

Oberneukirchen can be reached via the Waxenberg district road from Zwettl an der Rodl , where the Leonfeldner Straße (B126) leads, where Linz can be reached in around 20 minutes and Budweis in around 60 minutes.

The Hansberg Landstraße from Helfenberg via Gramastetten to Linz-Urfahr , the Schallenberg Bezirksstraße and the Brunnwald Bezirksstraße also run through the municipality .

The police station on the market square was closed a few years ago. The nearest police inspections are in Bad Leonfelden , Hellmonsödt and Helfenberg .

The next Red Cross bases are in Bad Leonfelden , St. Veit im Mühlkreis , Kirchschlag near Linz and Helfenberg . There is also an emergency doctor base in Zwettl an der Rodl .
