The High Courts in India are the higher courts in the Indian states . Your local jurisdiction extends over one or more states or union territories . Basic regulations on high courts are made under Part VI, Chapter V (Articles 214-231) of the Constitution of India . The judges at the high courts are appointed by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (the President of the Indian Supreme Court ) and the respective governor of the state . There are currently 24 high courts in India. The seat of the high courts is usually, but not always, the respective capital of the state.
The Calcutta High Court first began its work on July 2, 1862. There are currently 24 high courts in place. For some high courts, branches have been set up in locations with high numbers of cases or in states whose competent high court is outside of the respective state territory. In states / union territories with few cases, non-permanent branch offices have been created.
On July 20, 2016, the Indian government introduced a bill ( High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016 ) in the Lok Sabha , according to the Bombay High Court , Madras High Court and Calcutta High Court in future according to the modern names of the cities in Mumbai High Court , Chennai High Court and Kolkata High Court are to be renamed. The project met with resistance. The judges at the Calcutta High Court spoke out against the abandonment of the historic name. The parliament of Tamil Nadu voted in a resolution for the name Tamil Nadu High Court instead of Chennai High Court .

- ↑ From 1919 until the partition of India in 1947, Delhi and Punjab belonged to the jurisdiction of the Lahore High Court . Until 1966, the newly created High Court of Punjab in Shimla (from 1954 in Chandigarh ) was responsible for the Indian state of Punjab and the capital city of Delhi . In the course of the separation of the state of Haryana from Punjab in 1966, the court was divided between the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the new Delhi High Court , which until 1971 also had jurisdiction over the Himachal Pradesh area .
