The 2009/10 season was the 17th regular staging of the highest Czech ice hockey league, the O 2 Extraliga . Reigning champions were HC Energie Karlovy Vary , who defeated HC Slavia Prague 4-2 in the playoff final . A new participant in the Extraliga was HC Kometa Brno , who acquired the license from Orli Znojmo and thus rose to the Extraliga.

mode

All teams played against each other four times in 52 games, each team had 26 home and 26 away games over the entire season. The teams in places 1 to 6 qualified directly for the play-offs, which were held in the best-of-seven mode. The teams in places 7 to 10 played the other two playoff places in the best-of-five among themselves. The remaining four teams played a relegation round (play-out), the last of which had to take part in the league relegation against the champions of the first division, which was played out in the best-of-seven mode like the playoffs.

Season course

In the summer of 2009, many players of the so-called golden generation returned to the Czech Republic from the National Hockey League . These included František Kaberle (HC Kladno), Marek Malík (HC Vítkovice Steel), Radek Bonk (HC Oceláři Třinec) and Dominik Hašek , who made his comeback at HC Pardubice . Due to the global financial crisis, most of the Extraliga clubs cut their budgets by up to 25%. Therefore, the Czech clubs also had to sign more North American or Scandinavian players, as they demanded lower salaries compared to top Czech players.

As a result, there are more non-Eastern European players playing in the 2009/10 season than ever since the founding of the Extraliga - in 1929 HC Plzeň signed the AHL players Doug O'Brien and Mark Bomersback , the Bílí Tygři Liberec Jason DeSantis , of HC Kometa Brno Alex Bourret and Sasu Hovi as well as HC Pardubice Adam Pineault , Aaron MacKenzie and Jeff Jillson .

Before the season started, some coaches were also swapped between the teams. Pavel Hynek , who had reached the semi-finals with HC Plzeň in 2009, moved to HC Sparta Prague , where his predecessor, František Výborný , has now been an assistant coach. For this, the institution responsible HC Plzeň with Marian Jelinek previous assistant coach František Výborný as new head coach. At the Bílí Tygři Liberec , Jiří Kalous, the previous assistant coach of HC Slavia Prague, was signed as head coach.

After just four matchdays, the first coach, Vladimír Kýhos from HC Kometa Brno, was dismissed and replaced by Pavel Pazourek . Just a week later, Jaroslav Hübl senior resigned from HC Litvínov due to unsuccessful sport . At the end of October 2009, Pavel Hynek and František Výborný were sacked at Sparta Prague, as their team was only ninth in the table at that time. At the same time, Josef Paleček , who won the championship with HC Energie Karlovy Vary in 2009, had to leave his club. A week later, Pavel Hynek was introduced as the new coach of HC Energie Karlovy Vary, while Výborný was introduced as the new coach at HC České Budějovice .

final

In the final of the play-offs 2010, the third in the preliminary round HC Eaton Pardubice met HC Vítkovice Steel , who had occupied fourth place in the table. The series of a maximum of seven games in the Best of Seven mode was held from April 17, 2010. Since HC Pardubice was better placed in the main round table than its opponent, the former initially enjoyed home rights. With a sweep, the team from Pardubice defeated the steelworkers from Ostrava 4-0. The club won the fifth championship title in the club's history and set two new records: no team had made twelve wins in the playoffs until 2010 and the 45-year-old goalkeeper Dominik Hašek is the oldest player to ever play in the Extraliga. The latter contributed to this success with outstanding performances, including a goal against goals of 1.68, three shutouts and a catch rate of 93.68 percent.
