Liga Leumit (II)

The Ligat ha'Al ( Hebrew ליגת העל), currently officially named after the sponsor Ligat Toto ( Hebrew ליגת טוטו), is the top division in Israeli football. The name Ligat ha'Al can be roughly translated into German as Oberliga , sometimes the term Superliga is also used. Due to a change of sponsors, the league changed its name several times, it was already called Ligat Pelephone or currently Ligat Toto .

history

The Ligat ha'Al was founded in 1999 by the Israel Football Association as part of a reorganization of the league system. It replaced the League Leumit as the top division, which became the second division. Participants in the first 1999/2000 season were the 13 best of the previous year plus the champions of the Artzit league, which had been second-rate up to then . The following year there were three relegated teams with only one promoted team to reduce the number of teams to twelve.

For the 2009/10 season there was an increase to 16 clubs, but this was again reduced to 14 for the 2012/13 season . For this purpose, at the end of the 2011/12 season, as an exception, three teams relegated to the Le'umit league and only one promoted.

competition

mode

Since the 2012/13 season, the Israeli championship has been played with 14 clubs. After the 26 game days of the regular season, the league is divided into a championship and a relegation round.

The championship round of the top six teams will be played in a second round. The clubs start with the full number of points from the main round. The first in the table after the ten days of the championship round are the Israeli champions and take part in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League . The following two teams will take part in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League , as will the cup winners .

The last eight teams in the main round play a relegation round, in which each player only plays against each other once. Here, too, the number of points from the preliminary round is carried over. In addition, the four best-placed clubs are slightly preferred as they get one more home game than the other four. The two last-placed teams in the end are relegated to the second-class Le'umit league and are replaced by the two best-placed teams there.

Foreign players

The number of foreign players is currently limited to five per team.

The Ligat ha'Al has been supported by sponsors since 2002. The official name of the Israeli Premier League depends on the sponsor:

  • 2002–2004: Pelephone (Ligat Pelefon ליגת פלאפון)
  • Since 2005: Toto Organization (Ligat Toto ליגת טוטו)

Television rights

The Charlton Group has held the broadcast rights to the Ligat ha'Al since 2004. The games are shown on a pay-per-view basis . A major game is broadcast on free television on Mondays. There is also a summary of the games on Saturday.
