Kamikawa ( Jap. 上川町 , - chō ) is a city on the Japanese island of Hokkaido in the district Kamikawa in the sub-prefecture Kamikawa .

geography

Kamikawa is located in central Hokkaido along the Ishikari River . The wide river valley in the north is populated with 3558 inhabitants (as of September 30, 2019). Most of the 1049.24 km² large municipal area is uninhabited mountainous country: the Kitami mountainous region in the north, the Daisetsu-zan mountain range in the center and the Ishikari mountainous region in the south.

The population density is about 3 people per square kilometer. The mayor has been Yoshiji Satō since 2008.

Sōunkyō Hyōbaku Matsuri

Kamikawa is known for the Sōun-kyō Gorge of the Ishikari River, which is part of the Daisetsuzan National Park . The name comes from the earlier Ainu village Sōunbetsu, which means "river with many waterfalls". The two largest waterfalls in the gorge are the Ryūsei no Taki ( 流星 の 滝 ), 90 m high, and the Ginga no Taki ( 銀河 の 滝 ), 120 m, both of which are among the top 100 waterfalls in Japan . The Sōunkyō Hyōbaku Matsuri ice festival ( 層雲 峡 氷瀑 ま つ り , "Sōunkyō Ice Waterfall Festival") takes place every year from January to March , during which a large number of illuminated snow and ice sculptures are erected along the frozen river. Furthermore, the hot springs Sōunkyō Onsen are located in the gorge , where a large number of hotels, inns ( ryōkan ), guest houses and youth hostels are located.

Kamikawa is accessible by several roads: the Asahikawa-Mombetsu Highway from Pippu or Mombetsu , National Route 39 from Asahikawa or Abashiri , National Route 273 from Obihiro or Mombetsu, and National Route 333 from Asahikawa or Kitami . The Kamikawa Station is located on the Sekihoku Main Line of JR Hokkaido ; Trains run to Asahikawa or Abashiri .
