La donna del lago (The Lady from the Lake) is an opera seria (original name: "melodramma") in two acts by Gioachino Rossini . The libretto was written by Andrea Leone Tottola based on the verse epic The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott , published in 1810 . The first performance took place on September 24th or October 24th, 1819 in the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.

Scenes 1–3. At dawn, shepherds and hunters go about their usual activities on the banks of Loch Katrine (choir: “Del dì la messaggera”). Elena crosses the lake and sings of her longing for her true love, Malcolm (Cavatine: “Oh mattutini albori!”). At the edge of the lake Elena meets King Giacomo, who - in the hope of meeting the beautiful Elena - has disguised himself as Uberto. Elena thinks he is a lost hunter and offers him help. Giacomo agrees, and the two make their way to the apartment where they found refuge with their exiled father, the former Lord di Bothwel (Duettino: "Scendi nel piccol legno"). At the same time, the men in his entourage are looking for the king in disguise (chorus: "Uberto! Ah! Dove t'ascondi?").

Scenes 4–8. After arriving at Elena's father's house, the king notices her family's coat of arms and learns that Elena's father is Douglas d'Angus, his former teacher, who has since plotted against him. Elena's friends come to sing about the engagement that her father arranged with Rodrigo, the leader of a Scots tribe, the highlands (chorus: “D'Inibaca, donzella”). Uberto / Giacomo becomes jealous (duet: "Sei già sposa?"). He decides that Elena should not connect with Rodrigo (“Le mie barbare vicende”) and lets Elena and her family know what prospects he himself offers them (“Cielo! In qual estasi”). Malcolm, who has decided to join the highlands, appears. When he is alone, he sings about his memories of Elena (“Mura felici” - “Elena! Oh tu, ch'io chiamo”). Unseen, Malcolm overhears Elena as they talk to her father about the upcoming wedding with Rodrigo. Douglas again asks his daughter to agree to the marriage (aria: "Taci, lo voglio, e basti"). After Douglas resigns, Malcolm and Elena assure each other of their undying devotion (Duettino: "Vivere io non potrò").

Scenes 9–10. The highland warriors greet their leader Rodrigo (chorus: “Qual rapido torrente”). Rodrigo wishes to see his future bride (Cavatine: "Eccomi a voi, miei prodi"). She comes with her father. Douglas reminds Elena of her daughter duties and Rodrigo declares his love for her. Malcolm arrives and Rodrigo introduces him to Elena as his future bride, with whom he wants to bond. Despite Elena's best efforts to hide her feelings, both Rodrigo and Douglas notice the connection between Malcolm and Elena. Serano reports an impending attack by the king's troops. Rodrigo, Malcolm and the warriors of the Highlands prepare to take up the fight ("Su ... amici! Guerrieri!").

Scenes 1–2. Uberto / Giacomo came in the hope of finding Elena and saving her from the looming battles (Cavatine: “Oh fiamma soave”). Meanwhile, Elena asks Serano to find her father before he goes into battle. Uberto / Giacomo approaches Elena and declares his love for her. She confesses that she loves someone else (duet: "Alla ragion deh rieda"). Still, Uberto gives Elena a ring, claiming he received it from the king. The ring will help her to get help from the king in times of danger. Uberto / Giacomo is preparing to leave, but Rodrigo has overheard the previous conversation with his bride. Overwhelmed with anger and jealousy, Rodrigo orders his men to kill this stranger. Elena begs Rodrigo men to spare Uberto and then there is only a duel between Rodrigo and Uberto. The two men let go of each other, but Elena tries in vain to pacify the situation (trio: “Io son la misera”).

Scene 3. During a lull in the battle, Malcolm tries to find Elena. Serano tells him that she is going to see her father in the king's palace. Rodrigo has been killed and the highlands face certain defeat. Malcolm appears in the palace, determined to save Elena from danger, even if it is dangerous for himself (Aria: "Ah si pera: ormai la morte").

Scenes 4-6. At the palace, Douglas asks his former student King Giacomo for forgiveness, but the king refuses. In the meantime Elena has found her way into the palace and shows Uberto's ring. She hopes to save the lives of her father, Malcolm and even Rodrigo, whose death is not yet known. In the next room she hears Uberto's voice singing of his love for her ("Aurora! Ah sorgerai"). Elena is thrilled and becomes convinced that Uberto will help her speak to the king.

Scene 7. At the royal court, the king is greeted as he enters his throne room (chorus: “Impogna il re”). When Elena tries to approach him, she realizes that Uberto and King Giacomo are the same person. Giacomo is softened and because of his affection for Elena, decides to forgive both Douglas and Malcolm. Elena is happy to have never suppressed her love for her father and her true love for Malcolm, while everyone else is happy that peace has been restored (Rondò: “Tanti affetti in un momento”).

With its nature scenes, the opera anticipates elements of Rossini's late work Guillaume Tell (1829). The beginning is closely based on Scott's template. Instead of an overture there is a sixteen bar orchestral introduction suggesting the landscape of the Scottish Highlands . This is followed by the shepherd's choir "Del dì la messaggera", to which horns and hunting noises can be heard in the background. Afterwards Elena sings her cavatina "Oh mattutini albori" - according to Richard Osborne one of Rossini's most simple and loveliest cavatines. The rather static second act is a bit less qualitative than the first. The music critic Henry Chorley thought it was little more than a "concert in costume".

Other music numbers worth mentioning are:

  • Malcolm's performance scene with the Andantino cavatine “Elena! oh tu, ch'io chiamo ”and the Allegro cabaletta“ Oh quante lacrime ”(first act, scene 7), according to Charles Osborne, already brings to mind Bellini.
  • The trio Rodrigo / Douglas / Elena "Quanto a quest'alma amante" (first act, scene 10)

Work history

After the celebrated premiere of his opera Eduardo e Cristina on April 24, 1819 in Venice, Rossini traveled to Naples to compose his next opera for the Teatro San Carlo there . Its director had originally wanted to hire Gaspare Spontini for the following season . However, this was not available, and so Rossini stepped in, as emerges from a communication from the impresario Domenico Barbaja to the director of the Royal Theater on July 24, 1819. The date of the premiere is given differently in the literature. While Herbert Weinstock and Charles Osborne state that Rossini finished the composition on time and that the opera could be performed as planned on September 24, 1819 ( Wilhelm Keitel and Corago also mention this date ), Sabine Henze-Döhring writes in Piper's Encyclopedia of Music Theater of a month's delay and, like Richard Osborne and Grove Music Online, names October 24th. Douglas' aria "Taci, lo voglio" (first act, scene 8) and almost all of the recitatives come from an unknown colleague.

La donna del lago is the first Italian opera to be based on a work by Walter Scott . In doing so, she established an opera fashion, during which more than 25 more works were created by the middle of the century. Rossini probably got the idea for the material through a conversation with Désiré-Alexandre Batton , who was also in Naples in 1819 as a Rome Prize winner. Batton later reported to the Rossini biographer Giuseppe Radiciotti that he had talked to Rossini about possible templates for her next compositions. He mentioned Scott's poetry The Lady of the Lake , which he had read shortly before. Rossini then asked him to lend him the book. Two days later, Rossini said to him: “Thank you, my friend! I read the whole poem and I like it a lot. I will hand it over to Tottola immediately. "

At the world premiere at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples , Giovanni David (Giacomo V), Michele Benedetti (Douglas D'Angus), Andrea Nozzari (Rodrigo di Dhu), Isabella Colbran (Elena), Rosmunda Pisaroni (Malcolm Groeme), Maria Manzi ( Albina), Gaetano Chizzola (Serano) and Massimo Orlandini (Bertram). The premiere was not a great success, as the audience had expected a composition in the style of Ricciardo e Zoraide . According to Radiciotti, it was "numb from the unusual opulence of the orchestra and choir sound, from the volume of the trumpets on the stage, from the lyrical and then again epic and dramatic artistic numbers" and only recovered again with the old-fashioned final rondo of Colbran. The second performance, for which the number of trumpets was halved, was better received, and from then on the opera was very successful.

In addition to many other performances in Italian cities, the opera a. a. Performed in Italian in Dresden and Munich in 1821, in Lisbon in 1822 and in Vienna in German, on February 18, 1823 in London (Italian), in Saint Petersburg in 1824 (German) and on September 7 in the Paris Théâtre-Italy (Italian , 1825 French), on August 25, 1829 in New York (French, 1833 Italian) and 1831 in Berlin (German).

As was customary at the time, the opera was adapted for later performances. In a performance at the Roman Teatro Argentina on January 23, 1823, the duet “Nel rivederti, o caro” by Filippo Celli was sung in the second act, which was often integrated into the opera in the following years. Possibly Rossini himself added Giacomo's aria “T'arrendi al mesto pianto” from Ermione in the second act in Naples in 1820 . This was also retained in several subsequent productions in other cities.

A few months later, Rossini used music from the finale in the last scene of Bianca e Falliero . In 1822 he used the final rondò "Tanti affetti" in Venice to replace the tragic end of his opera Maometto II with a happy ending. On December 30, 1846, the pasticcio Robert Bruce was performed at the Opéra in Paris , originally conceived as a French version of La donna del lago and compiled by Louis Niedermeyer from this and other Rossini operas with Rossini's permission .

After 1860, La donna del lago disappeared from the repertoire. The first resumption was in Florence in 1958. Then there were further performances in London in 1969 , in Houston in 1981 , in Pesaro in 1983, and in 1992 at La Scala in Milan , without the work being able to establish itself in the repertoire. In 2007 the English festival Garsington Opera presented the work. In 2010 the opera was released at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in a production by Christof Loy with Joyce DiDonato in the title role; the coproduction was taken up in 2012 at the Theater an der Wien in a modified version with Malena Ernman's debut in the title role. Now the performances increased: also in 2010 at the Paris Opéra Garnier , again in 2011 at La Scala, in 2013 again at the Royal Opera House in London, at the Santa Fe Opera and in concert in Pesaro. In February 2015, Paul Curran staged a production at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City , again with Joyce DiDonato.
