The women's javelin at the 1986 European Athletics Championships was held on August 28 and 29, 1986 in the Neckar Stadium in Stuttgart .

The British vice world champion from 1983 and Olympic third from 1984 Fatima Whitbread became European champion . In qualifying, she set a new world record, behind which she lagged behind with her winning distance in the final. Second place went to the previous world record holder, Petra Felke from the GDR. Bronze went to the German thrower Beate Peters .

Record improvement

European champion Fatima Whitbread improved the existing championship record in qualifying on August 28 by 7.42 m to 77.44 m. With this distance the Briton also achieved a new world record. When she won the final on August 29, Fatima Whitbread was only slightly behind her new record with 76.32 m.

Eighteen participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 60.00 m. Ten athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the two next placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 59.60 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

European champion Fatima Whitbread achieved the following series of

  Fatima Whitbread, European champion with a world record, started as the reigning runner-up and third place in the Olympic Games from 1984 - in 1987 she became world champion, in 1988 she won Olympic silver

  Vice European Champion Petra Felke achieved her first major international success - in 1987 she became Vice World Champion, in 1988 she won Olympic gold, in 1990 European Championship bronze and 1991 World Championship silver
