Népstadion in Budapest

The men's hammer throw at the 1998 European Athletics Championships was held on August 18 and 19, 1998 in the Népstadion in the Hungarian capital, Budapest .

In this competition the Hungarian hammer throwers achieved a double victory. European champion was the World Cup -Third of 1995 Tibor Gécsek . Second place went to the 1996 Olympic champion, Balázs Kiss . The German Karsten Kobs won the bronze medal.

36 participants competed in two groups for the qualification round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 77.00 m. Seven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the five next-placed athletes to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 75.75 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.
