The women's 400-meter race at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 7, 8, 9 and 10, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .
33 athletes from 25 countries took part in the competition. The runners from Czechoslovakia achieved a double victory. The gold medal was won by the Olympic runner-up in 1980 and vice European champion from 1982 Jarmila Kratochvílová after 47.99 s, with which she set a new world record. The day before, she had already become world champion over 800 meters . Silver went with 48.59 s to the EM -Third 1982 taťána kocembová . On the final day, the two victorious Czech women secured the silver medal together with their country's 4 x 400 meter relay . The Soviet athlete Marija Pinigina , formerly Marija Kultschunowa, came in third place with 49.19 s and later won a second bronze medal with the 4 x 400 meter relay of the USSR.

The World Cup record was gradually increased to 47.99 seconds ( Jarmila Kratochvílová , Czechoslovakia , in the final on August 10, 1983). With this, world champion Jarmila Kratochvílová set a new world record and was the first female runner to stay below the 48-second mark.
