The Lebanese national football team is the national team of Lebanon and is run by the Fédération Lebanaise de Football Association .
history
The Lebanese played their first game on April 27, 1940 against an Israeli-Palestinian selection representing the State of Palestine / Erez Israel , this game ended with a 5-0 victory for Lebanon. The team was able to record its first participation in an international competition during the qualification for the Olympic Games. But in 1959 they lost to Iraq with 0: 8 and 0: 3.
Lebanon has not yet managed to qualify for a World Cup. The closest you failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , when you were able to reach the last qualifying round for the first time, but were eliminated from the bottom of the group. The Lebanese team first took part in qualifying for a soccer world championship in 1986 . Back then they lost their games against Qatar (0: 8 and 0: 7) and against Iraq (0: 6 and 0: 6). After these results, the team withdrew their participation after four of a total of six games planned. After declining to participate in 1990, Lebanon took part again in 1994, but failed in the first round to South Korea . In 1998 Lebanon failed against Kuwait, in 2002 against Thailand and in 2006 against South Korea. As part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup, Lebanon met India in the first round and defeated their opponents 4: 1 at home and reached the third round directly after a 2: 2 away. There you met Saudi Arabia , Uzbekistan and Singapore and lost all six games. As the bottom of the group, Lebanon missed qualifying for the next round.
Lebanon first took part in qualifying for the Asian Cup in 1972 . There the Lebanese reached the semi-finals (qualification), in which they were defeated 1: 2 to Iraq. In 1976 the qualifying tournament was supposed to take place in Beirut, due to the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war , the association decided not to participate. As the host of the 2000 Asian Cup, the team was automatically qualified, but after a 4-0 win against Iran and two draws against Iraq and Thailand, they did not get past the preliminary round. In 2004, the Lebanese team was only able to score against North Korea, with at least a 3-0 away win, but missed qualifying as third in the group.
The Lebanese national team did not take part in qualifying for the 2007 Asian Cup . The Asian Football Association has complied with the request of the Lebanese Association to be able to forego participation in qualification group D due to the "tragic circumstances". Because of the Israel-Lebanon conflict , those responsible did not expect a fine. The Lebanese association LFA had previously stated that due to the destruction it was extremely difficult to reach the national players and set up a team. The journey to the away games is "almost impossible" due to the bombing of the airport in the capital Beirut. Some national players are currently missing. Group D with Kuwait, Australia and Bahrain continued with just three teams. Lebanon's only game to date, a 1-1 draw against Kuwait on February 22nd, was canceled.
