Libera is a boys' choir from Norbury in south London . Libera is a charity , a UK non-profit organization, and operates on a non-profit basis.

The majority of Libera's members come from the St. Philip's Boys Choir in the parish of St. Philip's Church in the Anglican diocese of Southwark. However, talented singers have often been found in schools, where choir director Robert Prizeman regularly searches for talent. In this way, according to the company, one of the most successful soloists in the choir, Benjamin Crawley, entered the ensemble. This was initially known under the name Angel Voices . Its current name is identical to that of the recognition song Libera ( Latin : liberare 'liberate'), the text of which refers to Libera me ('liberate me!'), A part of the alternate chant of the Requiem, which is common in the Roman Catholic but also in the Anglican rite Refers. They have been performing under this name since the album of the same name was released in 1999. The reason for the renaming was the change in the music style, and the effort to open up their music to a larger audience.

Libera consists of about 40 boys between the ages of 7 and 17, with some of the boys in vocal training and not yet taking part in the concerts. Many of the young singers, who can no longer perform as sopranos after their voices break, stay with the choir into adulthood as tenors, basses or as composers and producers in the background.

Libera has produced many music contributions for the soundtracks of successful films such as Romeo and Juliet and Hannibal in recent years .

The boys' choir led by choir director Robert Prizeman has succeeded in crossing the mystical sound of sacred music with modernity. The result is a mix of pop and classic .

Albums

The Anglican parish of St. Philip's Church has a long choral tradition. The first non-traditional recording was made in 1984 when the boys of St. Philip's Boys Choir played the accompaniment choir for the singer Sal Solo in his song “San Damiano”. In 1987 the choir released the single "Sing Forever" and in 1988 the single "Adoramus". The choir's first full album, Sing For Ever, was released under the name St. Philip's Choir in 1988. The title song of the album was selected by the BBC as the anthem for the charity program Children in Need .

The second album, New Day , released in 1990 and published by BMG Ariola, was the first album to use the Angel Voices name . In the 90s the names “St. Philip's Boys Choir ”and“ Angel Voices ”are used equally for the choir. The third album Angel Voices was released in 1992 by DINO and again in 1993 by MCI. Angel Voices 2 was released in 1996 and Angel Voices 3 followed in 1997, both published by MCI and released under the name “St. Philip's Boy Choir ”.

Robert Prizeman released a single and a CD in 1995 called "Libera". The CD contained 7 remixes of his original song "Libera". The first 4 versions were recorded by Libera with Daren Geraghty as soloist, the last 3 sung by other artists. In the same year, the choir performed the song for the first time under the choir name Libera on the TV program "Sunday Live". In 1999 another album was released, entitled Libera , published by Warner Classics . Since then, the choir has appeared exclusively under the name "Libera" at all public appearances. In 2001 Warner Classics released the next album Luminosa and two years later a 2 CD set with the albums Libera and Luminosa under the title Complete Libera .

From 2004 to 2010 Libera had a permanent contractual relationship with EMI . The first album published by EMI was Free in 2004, Visions was released in 2005 . Both albums were released again in 2011 (like "Libera" and "Luminosa") as a double CD. Libera's 2006 album Angel Voices was nominated for the Classical Brit Awards in the Album of the Year category. In 2007, the choir's first live CD, "Angel Voices - The Concert", was recorded at a concert in Leiden, Holland. New Dawn was released in March 2008. In December 2008 Libera released the first double album Eternal (The best of Libera) with 26 tracks from previous albums and six new songs or remixes. In 2010 the album Peace was released . Since 2011 Libera have been releasing their works under the Warner Classic label. In autumn of that year, "The Christmas Album" was released for the first time since "Angel Voices 3" in 1997, a classic Christmas album. To date, the choir had supported Aled Jones, among others, with two collections of Christmas carols, one of which was released on DVD. The output remained virtually inexhaustible in the years that followed. However, for some time now there has been a noticeable musical departure from the classical sacred hymns of church music towards traditional and more popular sounds. In 2013, "Angels sing - X-mas in Ireland", the next Christmas long player hit the market in the form of a live CD. The album, recorded in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh, was number one on the UK Billboard charts for three weeks and heralded a new generation of singers and soloists in the choir. The last album to date was released in spring 2015 under the name "Angels sing - Libera in America". It was recorded in the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC in the summer of 2014 and thus once again contains live material.
