The list of castles and palaces in the Allgäu gives a large part of the castles , castle ruins and castles that have been removed , as well as the current and former castles in the Allgäu . Ornamental and replicas that were never used as residential buildings or for defense are not listed .

There are relatively many castles in this region, but a significant part of them has not been preserved or has even completely disappeared and is now only designated as a castle stables . Many castles in the Allgäu were particularly hard hit during the Peasants 'War and the Thirty Years' War, or at the beginning of the 19th century . But even in peaceful times, they were often not spared from decline. The reasons for this were the lack of need, higher demands on living comfort and representation, the elimination of defense priority or dilapidation. In the middle of the 19th century there were first attempts to preserve the historical building fabric. After the importance for tourism was recognized, since the end of the 20th century there have been increasing measures to maintain the castle complexes in the Allgäu. To this end, comprehensive concepts such as that of the Allgäu castle region were developed.

• Type: A distinction is made between the following building types: castle and palace.
• Condition: Describes the condition of the building. A distinction is made between "preserved", "partially preserved", "ruin", "wall remains" and "disappeared", whereby the grouping under "wall remains" is also a ruin, but only with remains of or no standing walls more.
• Construction: In this column, if known, the period of origin or the year of construction is given. Often this information is imprecise due to a lack of sources or is not clear for other reasons, for example because a castle or palace was rebuilt on the site of a previous building.
• Expiration: Indicates the year or period of expiration, destruction, or cancellation. If the building was destroyed several times, the information refers to the last devastation after which it was not rebuilt.
• Image: If possible, a picture of the building is included.
