history

Saint-Etienne church in Charmoille

The village is 1136/39 as C (h) almillis mentioned in 1173 as Charmayles . The place name probably goes back to a deminutive * calmicula in late Latin calmis , 'undeveloped / barren land'. Finds of the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa near Miserez indicate an early settlement of the municipality.

Hugues came from the noble family of Charmoille and was one of the founders of the Lucelle monastery in the first half of the 12th century. Charmoille shared the checkered history of Ajoie, which came to the Principality of Basel for the first time in 1271 . The village belonged to the Meieramt Alle from the 16th to the 18th century . The village was partially destroyed during the Thirty Years War . From 1793 to 1815 Charmoille belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont-Terrible , from 1800 connected to the Département Haut-Rhin . By decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern in 1815 and on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura. With effect from January 1, 2009, the municipality was merged with Asuel , Fregiécourt , Miécourt and Pleujouse to form the new municipality of La Baroche .

Attractions

The Saint-Etienne church dates from 1760, but was later renovated several times. The parish of Charmoille, which is also called La Baroche , was the first of the Ajoie in 1779 to be directly subordinate to the Bishop of Basel. The former school, a building from 1854, represents the neoclassical style and is equipped with a hipped roof and tower. In the village there are still characteristic farmhouses from the 19th century.
