NGC 5829 is a 13.1 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sc in the constellation Bear Guardian and about 250 million ly from the Milky Way.

Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a companion of low surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) . With its apparent companion IC 4526 , NGC 5829 forms the object Arp 42 , as well as the Hickson Compact Group 73 with PGC 53702 , PGC 53703 and PGC 53720 .

It was discovered on May 11, 1882 by Édouard Stephan .
