The district is located in the north of the country on the Estonian border.

population

Since 2009 there has been an administrative community with the main town Naukšēni and Koņi . In 2010 they had a total of 2,316 inhabitants.

Personalities

• Reinholds Bērziņš (1888–1938), revolutionary and victim of the Latvian operation of the NKVD , was born in Koņi.
