New Taipei or New Taipei ( 新 北市 , Xīnběi Shì , Tongyong Pinyin Sinběi Shìh , Zhuyin ㄒ ㄧ ㄣ ㄅ ㄟ ˇ ㄕ ˋ , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Sin-pak Chhī , official name in English New Taipei City ) is about 3.9 million inhabitants, the largest city in the Republic of China on Taiwan .
New Taipei was created on December 25, 2010 through the merger of all 29 cities and towns of the former Taipei County in northern Taiwan and has since had the status of a city directly under the government.
Naming
Originally, the transliteration Xinbei City of 新 北市 ("new northern city") was intended as the official English translation of the city name. However, there was resistance to this, among other things because Xinbei City is the Hanyu- Pinyin translation, which is also used in the People's Republic of China . Opponents of this name spoke out in favor of either Sinbei City as the name (the Tongyong-Pinyin translation commonly used in Taiwan ) or New Taipei City as the English name. After the two applicants for the office of mayor before the election on November 27, 2010, Eric Chu ( KMT ) and Tsai Ing-wen ( DPP ), both strongly supported the latter name, it was decided by broad consensus that the the official English name should be New Taipei City in the future .
geography
New Taipei encloses the city of Taipei , borders in the southwest on the government-direct city of Taoyuan , in the southeast on the district of Yilan , in the north on the independent city of Keelung and on the East China Sea as well as on the Formosa Road in the northwest.
In the central and western parts, the metropolis merges with the Taipei Basin . The Yangmingshan National Park runs through the north of the city. The Xueshan mountain range , the northernmost branch of the central high mountains of the island, which extends to Cape Sandiau , the easternmost point of Taiwan, runs along the south-eastern city limits . In the south of the urban area, the mountains reach heights of over 2000 m. The main rivers in New Taipei are the Tamsui and its tributaries, the Keelung and Xindian .
Since the city developed from the former Taipei County, there is no actual city center. The districts near the Taipei border are mostly densely populated, while other parts of the city have a more rural structure.
climate
The climate in New Taipei is subtropical and characterized by the monsoons . January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 12.4 ° C, while July is the hottest with an average of 28.8 ° C. There is a weather station of the Taiwan Meteorological Service in the Tamsui district (details see there).
Administration, transport, demographics
The previous cities and towns in Taipei County have had the status of districts ( 區 , Qu ) since New Taipei was founded .
Over 80% of the population live in ten formerly independent large cities ( 市 , Shì ), which take up a sixth of the total area. Almost 30% of New Taipei's residents are originally from Taipei . Four districts are designated as former urban parishes ( 鎮 , Zhèn ), the remaining 15 had the status of rural parishes ( 鄉 , Xiāng ).
The city council is located in the former Taipei County Administration District in Banqiao .
