About this picture

Kuppenheim is a town in the west of Baden-Württemberg near Rastatt .

geography

location

Kuppenheim is located at the entrance to the Murg Valley in the northern Black Forest , which is why the municipality is also called the “Gate to the Murg Valley” in addition to “Knöpflestadt”. Even in the middle of the city, the terrain begins to rise due to its peripheral location towards the Black Forest . The height differences on Kuppenheimer district range from 118 m in Won "Lower Eichel Plan" over 127 m in the city center to 297 meters in the Hirschacker. In the hills of Kuppenheim you can see the cooling towers of the Philippsburg power plant 50 km away, weather permitting and clear visibility .

City structure

The city of Kuppenheim is divided into the core city of Kuppenheim and the district of Oberndorf. The spatial boundaries are identical to those of the earlier municipalities of the same name. The official name of the Oberndorf district takes the form "Kuppenheim-Oberndorf".

The city of Kuppenheim belongs to the core town of Kuppenheim. The village of Oberndorf belongs to the Oberndorf district. In the field of nuclear town lying deserted villages Giger mountain and Fichtental.

history

Remains of the city wall

When Kuppenheim was founded is unclear, but it is certain that there was already a settlement in the Kuppenheim district during Roman times , as the Roman roads that were important at that time ran along the foothills of the Black Forest . B. along the L67 road to Baden-Baden .

Kuppenheim itself was first mentioned in a document around 1095. At that time it was the most important place in the Ufgau , a landscape between the southern Ortenau and the northern Kraichgau . In addition, the Murg represents the former border between the Alemannic and the South Franconian language area. As a result, the old Kuppenheim dialect, which belongs to the Lower Alemannic dialects, has South Rhine-Franconian language features.

In 1283 the city was sold to the Margraves of Baden by the Counts of Eberstein , who had already passed the zenith of their power . In 1453 there is even talk of an "Amptsstatt Cuppenheim", to which 14 villages belonged. From 1500 the city was also part of the Swabian Empire . In 1535, Kuppenheim was elevated to the status of an administrative center of the margraviate of Baden-Baden and was responsible for more than 22 villages. But in the course of the War of the Palatinate Succession , Kuppenheim was burned down "except for one house" in 1689 and thus lost its status as an administrative city. This passed to the now royal seat of the margraviate of Baden-Baden, Rastatt . After a slow reconstruction at the beginning of the 18th century, the city grew noticeably beyond the former city wall. The remnants of the fortifications were razed at the beginning of the 19th century, only parts of the city wall remained.

At that time, the parish priest in Kuppenheim was Rector Franz Joseph Herr, an important clergyman who had both the town church and the Antonius chapel renovated and rebuilt. Herr, presumably an illegitimate descendant of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden , is an honorary citizen of the city of Kuppenheim.

In the course of the Baden Revolution , a battle took place near Kuppenheim in 1849 between the irregulars and the Prussian intervention troops . The Prussian military was also stationed in Kuppenheim during the siege of the Rastatt fortress.

After many Kuppenheim residents had died in World War I, the city was hit hard by the depression of the 1920s. To make matters worse, Kuppenheim was in the demilitarized zone. Many citizens therefore emigrated to the USA during this time . In this context it is worth mentioning that an emigrant from Kuppenheim in the USA built up a large textile company in the 19th century, which was called "Kuppenheimer".

The time of National Socialism did not leave Kuppenheim untouched either. The loss of the town charter in 1935 weighed heavily on the courageous town pastor Heinrich Geiler, another honorary citizen of the town, neither before nor after the seizure of power by the National Socialists, regardless of threatening personal consequences, in the pulpit and in his church paper to speak clearly against the regime. A street was later named after him.

In the Second World War, Kuppenheim got off relatively lightly.

In 1950 Kuppenheim was re-granted city rights by the then President of the State of (Southern) Baden , Leo Wohleb .

The legend of the button city

During the Thirty Years' War the name "Knöpflestadt", the most famous nickname of Kuppenheim, was born. According to legend, the Kuppenheimers were besieged by the Swedes and when the food supplies slowly ran out, a ruse was decided: everyone should collect all the flour and eggs in order to cook “Knöpfle”, a kind of spaetzle . These were then thrown over the city wall to make the enemy believe that they still had enough supplies. Then the Swedes broke off the supposedly unsuccessful siege and Kuppenheim was saved.

On the history of the Jewish community

The first evidence of Jewish life in Kuppenheim dates back to the early 15th century; the last Jews were deported to the Gurs assembly camp in the early 1940s and later to the Auschwitz concentration camp . None of the deported Jews from Kuppenheim survived.

The first mention of a synagogue dates back to 1714, which means that the oldest synagogue in what is now the Rastatt district was located in Kuppenheim. During the November pogroms in 1938 (“Reichskristallnacht”) it was also destroyed by flames. The rubble was only removed years later. A Jewish schoolhouse was built next to the synagogue in 1826. There were two women's baths in the previous building.

The Jewish cemetery was first mentioned in writing in 1694. As is customary for Jewish cemeteries, this too had to be laid out some distance from the site, in this case on the Mergelberg, directly above today's rifle house. Jews from all over the Central Baden region and beyond were buried in this cemetery. In 1938 the funeral hall was destroyed during the November pogroms. During the Second World War, a number of gravestones were knocked over by the Nazis. The turmoil of the war prevented the Nazis from completely destroying this valuable burial site and it was preserved for posterity.

coat of arms

The Kuppenheim coat of arms consists of the typical Baden gold state coat of arms with a red sloping bar. In the upper field there is a clover leaf , which is supposed to represent a stylized cross, which probably stood for the Deanery Kuppenheim. In the lower field there is a wolf rod or a raftsman's hook, a sign that the rafting trade was also located in Kuppenheim .

The oldest stone-carved coat of arms of Baden is located on the property at Friedrichstrasse 68. One of the four city gates originally stood at this point, all of which were demolished in 1813.

regional customs

'S sedge onion

An old Oberndorf legend is that of a forest woman named Riedelwiebel. It used to be said to small children: “Go to the Riedel, so there's Riedelwiebel!” That was a specter from the “Riedel” (forest between Oberndorf and Kuppenheim), whose highest point is called “Heidenburg”. According to legend, this is where the golden calf is buried.

Pentecost

Pentecost

Originally native to the entire Rastatt district, this custom has only survived in the Oberndorf district. It goes back to the legend of the Pentecost king and queen, who were accompanied by the Pentecostal bearer. He was a lazy and pea- loving fellow who, out of sheer greed for the green legumes, always appeared too late for the royal couple to move in and always forgot his horse. Hence the mockery of him is:

“Pentecost, Pentecost, oha!
Has peas eaten,
has forgotten his horse in the stable! "

On every Whit Monday, an older boy is chosen to be the Whitsun bearer and wrapped in a secret place in the forest with ferns and willows so tightly that he is no longer recognized, but can hardly walk. The ferns are collected by the so-called dividers, which are boys who have participated in the rattling and the Pentecost at least in the previous year. An approx. 2 m long tail, which is carried by the younger boys, belongs to its disguise. He is led into the village while singing the mocking song. He is preceded by a boy who carries a bell on a long stick and thus announces the Whitsun. The dividers collect benevolent gifts from the residents. At the end, the Whitsun bear is led back into the forest and his disguise is removed.

Economy and Infrastructure

From 1850 on, Kuppenheim also experienced a pre-industrial boom. Moving away from a pure farming village, various medium-sized companies developed it into a modern city: For example, Kuppenheim was referred to as “Badische Kofferstadt” until the post-war period because of the Schaeuble suitcase factory, which no longer exists; later other similar establishments followed. The location in the technology region of Karlsruhe , nestled between the automobile cities of Rastatt and Gaggenau and the Baden-Baden swimming pool, made a significant contribution to this .

From the 1980s, the industrial areas were greatly expanded, so that they already take up more than a third of the total built-up area of the core city.

Rail transport

Route network of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn

Kuppenheim has a train station on the Kuppenheim– Bad Rotenfels section of the Murg Valley Railway, which has been expanded to two tracks. The S8 runs every hour from the Albtalbahnhof as a tram to Karlsruhe city center and the S81 runs at the same rate to Karlsruhe Central Station .

From the end of July to mid-October, the “Murgtäler” bike express stops on its journey from Ludwigshafen via Mannheim , Heidelberg and Karlsruhe to Freudenstadt Hbf also in Kuppenheim.

The bistro on the platform is now located in the rather stately station building of the Kuppenheim station, which was still used by Deutsche Bahn when the light rail on the Murg Valley Railway opened .

Jonas Kuppenheimer

In the USA there existed from 1862 to 1997 a company called "Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers Inc." This company specialized in the manufacture of exclusive men's fashion. The founder was Jonas Kuppenheimer (born March 6, 1837). He lost his state and civil rights at the end of 1857 when he did not comply with his draft and therefore emigrated from Kuppenheim to America to work as a clerk in Terre Haute . There he was drafted into a company in Indiana at the beginning of the American Civil War and released in 1862 for incapacity for work. Then he returned to Terre Haute and founded a clothing wholesaler with his older brother Bernhard, who returned to Kuppenheim for another visit in 1873. Jonas Kuppenheimer died on July 11, 1902.

His company continued to grow and reached its heyday with 167 branches in the United States from about 1890 to 1930. But in the course of the last decades things went downhill with “Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers”, until in 1996 44 of the 87 remaining branches suddenly had to be closed. In 1997 the remaining branches were taken over by “The Men's Warehouse Inc.” with over 330 branches, so that “Kuppenheimer Men's Clothiers” disappeared completely from the scene.

The old advertising posters from the 1920s and 1930s were something special, and the first thing that catches the viewer's eye is the name Kuppenheimer. These were made by the artist Joseph Christian Leyendecker , who also emigrated from Germany .

Married couple Erwin and Theresia Roos

Erwin Roos was an entrepreneur and painter. In 1923 he took over a paint factory from his mother. In 1934 the war memorial at the Wörtel Stadium was erected according to his plans. Erwin Roos also painted different views of Kuppenheim. He died on May 21, 1960. A few years ago a street was named after him.

His wife Theresia Roos was a nurse in various military hospitals in both world wars and headed the Kuppenheim DRK sisters from 1935 to 1974. She was awarded the DRK Decoration of Honor and the Federal Cross of Merit for her commitment. With well over 100 years, she became one of the oldest residents of Kuppenheim.
