Two Americans and two Cubans as well as one participant each from Barbados, Great Britain, Jamaica and South Africa had qualified for the final.
The favorites were the 2008 Olympic champion Dayron Robles from Cuba, the reigning world champion Jason Richardson from the USA and his compatriot Aries Merritt as the best of the year.
Robles got off to a good start in the final. However, he suffered from a tendon injury. He knocked over the sixth hurdle and was subsequently disqualified for doing this on purpose.
Merritt had the best start and was in the lead from the start. He won with a new Olympic record ahead of Jason Richardson and the Jamaican Hansle Parchment. The Briton Lawrence Clarke crossed the finish line in fourth and Ryan Brathwaite from Barbados in fifth. Just behind, Cuban Orlando Ortega finished sixth ahead of Lehann Fourie from South Africa.
In the 27th Olympic final, Aries Merritt ran for the 19th US victory. It was also the 13th double success for the USA in this discipline.
Hansle Parchment became the first Jamaican medalist over the 110 meter hurdles .
