final

August 15, 2016, 10:45 p.m.

All three Kenyans and two Americans qualified. There were also participants from Algeria, France and Poland.

The top favorite was the Kenyan Olympic champion from 2012 , world champion and world record holder David Lekuta Rudisha , who started on track three . Right from the start he set a fast pace and had caught up with his neighbor on lane four, the Frenchman Pierre-Ambroise Bosse. After two hundred meters, Rudisha's compatriot Alfred Kipketer took the lead, who led the field into the last lap after an intermediate time of a very fast 49.23 seconds. Rudisha, Bosse and US runner Boris Berian followed at a distance of three meters. With almost three hundred meters to go, Rudisha then went forward, set himself apart from his pursuers and could no longer be caught. In the last corner Bosse also increased the pace and took second position. But sixty meters from the finish, the Frenchman was stopped and passed by the Algerian Taoufik Makhloufi. The US runner Clayton Murphy, who secured bronze, also passed the declining boss, so that there was no medal for the French. Just behind him, the Kenyan Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich took fifth place, ahead of Vice European Champion Marcin Lewandowski from Poland.

It was a quick race. Silver medalist Taoufik Makhloufi set a new Algerian national record, the first three remained under 1:43 minutes.

David Lekuta Rudisha won his personal second gold medal and the third consecutive gold medal for Kenya in this discipline.
