Ottnang am Hausruck is a market town in the Vöcklabruck district in Upper Austria's Hausruckviertel with 3911 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Vöcklabruck .

geography

Ottnang am Hausruck is located 554 m above sea level in the Hausruck district. The extension is 6.8 km from north to south and 7.7 km from west to east. The total area is 30.3 km². 32.6% of the area is forested, 57.6% is used for agriculture.

geology

A regional period in the Tertiary is named after Ottnang, the Ottnangium , also known as the Ottnang stage or Ottnangia , sometimes shortened to Ottnang . The Ottnangian is a regional chronostratigraphic stage of the Miocene (Neogene) in the central Paratethys area. The decisive factors for the naming of this geological stage are rocks that occur in Ottnang and the surrounding area and that have been well researched there.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 3743 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 3745 inhabitants.

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . On the castle in the village of Oberbergham Plötzenedt of the noble family who was from the 17th to the 19th century, the Austrian branch Pflachern resident.

Ottnang was occupied several times during the Napoleonic Wars .

During the February fighting in 1934 , armed clashes broke out in the village of Thomasroith .

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

The community was part of the Schwanenstadt judicial district until the end of 2004 and became part of the Vöcklabruck judicial district on January 1, 2005.

Blazon : Between green, serrated flanks in silver, a black, erect bear with a red tongue and red claws, who holds a black, red glowing miner's lamp in his left paw. The community colors are white-green.

The municipal coat of arms was awarded in 1971. The bear refers to the village of Bärnthal, the miner's lamp to the former lignite mining in Thomasroith.

The church, surrounded by a cemetery, was originally built in the 13th century in Gothic style. At the beginning of the 18th century it was rebuilt and extended to the current three-aisled shape under Carlo Antonio Carlone .
  • The south field tunnel in Thomasroith was set up as a show tunnel by the Thomasroith miners' association and is a reminder of around 250 years of lignite mining in the Hausruck area - u. a. also in Thomasroith, where the mountain management once stood.

economy

After the Second World War, the company Holztreppen Weidinger, which still exists today, developed from the former Weidinger carpentry workshop. At the beginning of the 1970s, some employees of this company went into business for themselves and founded "Hausjell, Purrer & Stockinger Holztreppenbau".

Another important company in the region is Engel Glas in the Redl district.
