Reinhard Heß (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinhard Heß (born June 30, 1904 in Trier , † August 9, 1998 in Wittlich ) was a German painter and glass painter . He designed windows for over 40 churches in the Diocese of Trier , mostly in collaboration with the architect Fritz Thoma .

family

Reinhard Heß was the oldest of nine children of Peter Heß (1876–1921) and Gertrud Heß, b. Steffens (1880-1946). Gertrud Heß came from a family of winegrowers and hosts from Alf on the Moselle . Peter Hess, who came from a family of butchers in Trier, started his own business as a master painter and also took on orders for church painting. In his free time he devoted himself to painting and copied old masters. Reinhard Hess came into contact with painting in this way as a child.

In 1926 Reinhard Heß married Anna Maria Doyen (1902–1982), with whom he would have three children.

career

In the 1920s, Reinhard Heß completed an apprenticeship in his father's company and at the same time attended the crafts and arts and crafts school in Trier. His teachers were Hans Proppe and August Trümper. After the death of his father he worked as a church painter in Luxembourg and in 1923 he took over the management of his father's painting business. Until 1925 he attended the crafts and arts and crafts school again. In the same year he took part for the first time in an exhibition ( Business and Art ) in Trier.

In 1926 he was awarded first prize in a poster competition organized by the Reich Committee for Wine Propaganda. His design - in a slightly modified form - is still today the emblem of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries .

In 1928 Reinhard Heß went on his first study trip to Italy and stayed for six months in Rome , Florence and Venice . There he was enthusiastic about the pittura metafisica and the pictures by Gino Severini , Giorgio de Chirico , Carlo Carrà , Giorgio Morandi and Filippo De Pisis , which he could see in the original in the local art galleries.

After his return from Italy he was involved in the painting of the church of Neumagen on the Moselle, based on designs by August Trümper. When Heinrich Dieckmann (1890–1963) became director of the crafts and arts and crafts school in 1930, he appointed Hess to teach painting and materials science.

As Dieckmann, who was forced to resign in 1934, had to Hess after the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1935 to give up his place. In order to earn a living, he passed the master's examination as a painter and rejoined the family painting business that his brothers had meanwhile continued to run. During this time, Hess did not take part in any exhibitions and only sold pictures to friends and sponsors. In 1940 Reinhard Heß was called up for military service and, after initially stationed in Trier, was transferred to Holland and later to Trieste .

In 1945 he returned to Trier and in 1946 was appointed by Fritz Grewenig (1891–1974) as an assistant teacher for applied painting and graphics at his old school, which had been called the master school for the creative craft since 1943 and from 1951 Trier Werkschule (today Trier University ) . From 1947 to 1953 Reinhard Heß was the deputy director of the school, where he worked in the decorative painting department until his retirement in 1969.

In 1948 Reinhard Heß was commissioned to design a window in the northern transept of the church of the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier. It was his first commission to design a church window. Since many churches had lost their windows as a result of the war damage, this field of activity should bring many orders in the following years. In the 1950s and 1960s Reinhard Heß designed glass windows for numerous churches in the Diocese of Trier, e. B. in Saarbrücken, Andernach, Niedermendig, Koblenz. For the Heilig-Rock pilgrimage in 1959, he designed the curtain with the head of Christ for the high altar in Trier Cathedral . He also designed the windows of the east crypt of the cathedral, for which he received recognition for art in architecture in 1975 . In addition to his designs for church windows, Reinhard Heß created over 800 oil paintings and watercolors , as well as prints and drawings.

Hess was one of the founding members of the State Professional Association of Visual Artists (BBK) founded in 1948 . He was also a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bildender Künstler am Mittelrhein (AKM) founded in 1949 and the European Association of Visual Artists from the Eifel and Ardennes (EVBK) founded in 1957 . Since 1958 he belonged to the Neue Gruppe Rheinland-Pfalz (NG).

In 2003 the city of Trier named a street after him, which in 2004 was renamed from “Reinhard-Heß-Straße” to “Maler-Heß-Straße” to avoid confusion with Rudolf Heß . Reinhard Heß is buried in the parish cemetery St. Matthias in Trier.
