Toll tower

Winklern is a market town with 1214 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Carinthia in Austria .

geography

The community lies at the foot of the Großglockner massif between the Schober , Goldberg and Kreuzeck groups in the upper Möll valley . The villages of Winklern are between 900 and 1650 meters above sea level. Due to its geographical location, Winklern is also called the “gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park ”.

Community structure

The municipality is divided into the two cadastral communities Winklern and Reintal and comprises the following seven localities (number of inhabitants in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Langang (99)
  • Namlach (162)
  • Penzelberg (92)
  • Reintal (95)
  • Stone (14)
  • Winklern (714)
  • Between Mountains (38)

history

Winklern was first mentioned in a document between 1041 and 1060. At that time, today's municipal area was under the rule of the Salzburg and Brixen bishops. Together with its neighboring town Reintal, which at that time was already known as a market, Winklern came under the rule of the Counts of Görz-Tirol after 1213 , who set up a customs post here. Its location on Iselsberg made Winklern an important place as a lifting point for customs duties and tolls. Today's landmark of the community, the toll tower in the center of Winklern, as it is called today, was first mentioned in 1325. This building, built in the early Gothic style, fulfilled various tasks in the course of its history, it mainly served as a granary and residential tower. It is possible that its construction was originally initiated by the Romans , who are likely to have used it as a watchtower to secure their traffic routes at this strategically important point in both north-south and west-east directions.

After the Counts of Gorizia died out, the property fell to the Habsburgs and changed hands several times in the centuries that followed.

In 1850, the community of Winklern was constituted, which initially included the cadastral communities Mörtschach and Stranach, which in 1898 became the independent local community of Mörtschach ; Between 1973 and 1991 this belonged temporarily again to Winklern. In 1930 Winklern was raised to a market town . It was the seat of the district court until 1979 .

population

At the time of the 2001 census , Winklern had 1,134 inhabitants, 96.2% of whom were Austrian and 1.2% German . 91.9% supported the Roman Catholic and 3.6% supported the Evangelical Church. 3.5% of the population were without religious beliefs.

Population development

The development of the population shows a growth with phases of slight declines over the last 150 years. Compared to the neighboring communities, Winklern shows, in addition to Rangersdorf and Stall, a growing population over the past 70 years. There has only been a slight downward trend in the last ten years.

Relative population development

One reason for the increase in the number of residents in Winklern in the first decade of 2000 is the opening of the senior citizen and nursing home in 2004.

education

Winklern and the four neighboring communities show a very uniform picture with regard to the education of the population over the age of 15 (as of 2016). Compared to the federal state of Carinthia, however, there is a relatively high proportion in the areas of compulsory education and teaching, compared to a lower number of university graduates.

economy

Economic structure

A comparison of the areas in which the employed work shows some abnormalities:

The new middle school in Winklern with the school mission statement " National Park Hohe Tauern " employs 37 teachers (school year 2017/2018). The retirement and nursing home St. Laurentius offers space for 56 senior citizens in 28 single and 14 double rooms. These two institutions lead the way in social and public services among the employed. In addition, there are still an above-average number of employees in construction and in trade in Winklern :

Commute

Winklern shows another peculiarity among commuters: While there are significantly more out-commuters than in-commuters in all neighboring communities, Winklern has a positive commuter balance. The breakdown of commuters from Winklern shows a large peak at distances of 5 to 19 kilometers and a smaller peak at distances over 99 kilometers, especially among outbound commuters:

Tourism is an important economic factor. The main season is summer, but there is also a small peak in February. A comparison with the four direct neighboring communities shows no connection between the number of inhabitants and the number of overnight stays:

In the market town there is a kindergarten, an elementary school, the national park Mittelschule Winklern ( new middle school ) and since 1986 the music school Oberes Mölltal.
