Sali is a municipality on the island of Dugi Otok in Croatia .

Location and inhabitants

Sali is the largest town on the island and at the same time the main town of the entire municipality of Sali. It includes: Božava, Brbinj, Dragove, Luka, Savar, Soline, Veli Rat, Verunić, Zaglav, Zverinac and Žman. In 2011 the entire community had a total of 1,698 inhabitants. Zverinac is the only village that is not on the island of Dugi Otok. Sali is located in the bay of the same name on the southern part of the island. Sali is also the administrative center of the Telaščica Nature Park . The Jadrolinija car ferry comes from Zadar and docks in Brbinj . The G&V Line Iadera passenger ferry heads for Sali and Zaglav .

history

The first written mention of the Sali settlement was in 1105. The name came from the main source of income, salt. The church dedicated to the Assumption of Sali is mentioned as early as 1350. The current church was built in 1465 in Gothic style, expanded in 1581 and renovated in 1871 and 1895.

In 1841 the first primary school was founded in Sali. Teaching was in Italian until 1873. Little by little, all parts of the village had their own school. Today only Sali and Božava have their own school.

The fish canning factory “Mardešić” has been operating its own factory in the settlement since 1905, and its own fishing fleet until the 1980s. It is the oldest in Croatia. Mainly sardines and mackerel are processed as well as the salting of anchovies . The factory was an important employer on the island of Dugi Otok. Depending on the fishing season, 65 to 75 people work here. There used to be 450 together with the fishermen. Until the 1980s, packing was carried out at the jetty, after which the new factory building was built a little further away. In 2017, the Pilchardus company from Zadar and the traditional French company Chancerelle bought the fish factory and invested in the machinery and infrastructure
