Koshi ( Japanese 越 国 Koshi no kuni ) was a Japanese province in the area of today's Hokuriku region or the prefectures of Fukui , Ishikawa , Niigata and Toyama .

At the end of the 7th century it was divided into three separate provinces: Echizen ( 越 前 国 , literally: "Front Koshi"), Etchū ( 越 中国 , literally: "Middle Koshi") and Echigo ( 越 後 国 , literally: "Hinter -Koshi "). All three countries together were later referred to as Esshū ( 越 州 , "Koshi provinces") and San'etsu ( 三越 , the three Koshi ' ).

Koshi is also mentioned in the mythological birth of the Japanese islands ( 国産 みKuniumi ) described in Nihon Shoki , where she is one of the children of Izanagi and Izanami as "Koshi Island" ( 越 洲Koshi no shima ) .
