Grafendorf bei Hartberg is a market town with 3,161 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the east of Styria in the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and in the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld . Since 2015, it has been merged with the Stambach community as part of the Styrian community structural reform , the new community continues the name "Grafendorf bei Hartberg".

Geographical location
Grafendorf bei Hartberg is located in the eastern Styrian hill country about six kilometers north of the district capital Hartberg near the border with Burgenland . The Hartberger Safen rises in the north of the market town and then flows through it lengthways and takes in numerous smaller streams. The eastern part of the municipality is drained by the Lungitzbach , a right tributary of the Lafnitz .

history
The area around Grafendorf was already settled in the Neolithic , as some finds show. When the Romans around 15 BC BC as far as the Danube, today's municipal area became part of the province of Noricum . Some finds indicate a settlement.
Subsequently, the Slavs settled the municipality. At the end of the 8th century, it came to the Frankish Empire through Charlemagne . Soon after, Eastern Styria was conquered by the Hungarians , so that the settlement only after the reconquest by Heinrich III. could be continued.
Around 1130, the place Grafendorf was founded by Ekbert II von Formbach-Pitten as a two-line grave village complex.
Grafendorf was first mentioned in a document in 1144 and was called very well known . In 1158 the Vornbach monastery became the landlord through a donation, the administration was carried out from the Gloggnitz provost's office. Grafendorf remained in the possession of Vornbach Monastery until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803, after which it fell to the state and was auctioned off to the owner of a glass factory in 1815.
From 1831 to 1838 the Vorau Abbey was the landlord of Grafendorf before it became an independent municipality in 1849. In 1964 Grafendorf was raised to a market town.

Culture and sights
- The 3-castle hiking trail leads to Schloss Kirchberg am Walde , Schloss Aichberg and Schloss Reiterau .
- Kirchberg am Walde Castle was initially built as a castle around 1130. It was the seat of power and the starting point for the settlement of the municipality. After the destruction by the Turks, the castle was rebuilt in 1532 by Count Trauttmansdorff , who were owners from 1443 to 1669.
- Since 1923, today's castle has housed an agricultural school and education center for agriculture and forestry in Eastern Styria.

- The Grafendorf local history museum shows the development of the community area from the Neolithic, Roman and Middle Ages to the present day. It is only open by prior arrangement.
Economy and Infrastructure

Grafendorf bei Hartberg is located directly on the Wechsel road B 54 to Friedberg and Hartberg. The south autobahn A2 to Graz and Vienna can be reached via the Hartberg junction (115) and is around nine kilometers away.
Grafendorf train station is on a hill outside the village. It offers access to the Thermenbahn with the Friedberg - Hartberg - Fehring route and regional train connections every two hours .

Mayor of the community is the employee Johann Handler (ÖVP).
The community board also includes the first vice mayor Harald Pöltl (ÖVP), the second vice mayor Gerald Hofer (FPÖ), the community treasurer Johann Rechberger (ÖVP) and board member Bernhard Winkler (SPÖ).

coat of arms
The Styrian state government gave the market town of Grafendorf bei Hartberg its own coat of arms on August 1, 1964. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took place with effect from January 1, 2016.
The blazon (description of the coat of arms) reads: A red griffin in a silver shield.
