Movie and TV
List of Sherlock Holmes films (selection):
- In the 1920s, the detective was embodied in a cinema serial with 47 parts by Eille Norwood (1861-1948).
- One of the best-known actors is Basil Rathbone , who starred for the first time in The Hound of Baskerville Sherlock Holmes in the 1940s with Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson . The other films with Rathbone as Holmes were no longer based on Doyle's models, see e.g. B. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes . In total, Rathbone played Holmes 14 times and is therefore considered the most successful and perhaps best actor of the character, at least he shaped her for decades.
- The first American Holmes television series was first broadcast in 1954/55. The producer was Sheldon Reynolds (1923-2003), who also directed 9 of the 39 half-hour episodes and wrote the scripts for eight episodes. The role of Holmes was played by the British actor Ronald Howard (son of Leslie Howard ), Watson was played by Howard Marion-Crawford (1914-1969). A number of prominent supporting actors worked in the series, for example Paulette Goddard , Delphine Seyrig , Michael Gough , Dawn Addams , Natalie Schafer and Lou van Burg .
- In 1959, Peter Cushing played Holmes alongside André Morell's Dr. Watson in the first color version of The Hound of the Baskervilles , which he played in the second season of the BBC series Sherlock Holmes in 1968 with Nigel Stock as Dr. Watson re-embodied. In the first season, Holmes was played by Douglas Wilmer . One last time Cushing appeared as Holmes in the television movie The Masks of Death in 1984. There was Sir John Mills seen as Watson.
- In 1967/68 Erich Schellow played alongside Paul Edwin Roth as Dr. Watson, the detective in the six-part German television series Sherlock Holmes, based on original stories by Conan Doyle.
- From 1979 to 1986 the Russian television series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson ( Prikljutscheniya Scherloka Cholmsa i doktora Watsona ) with Wassili Liwanow (Holmes) and Vitali Solomin (Watson). It consists of five two- to three-part films.
- Ian Richardson played Holmes in two British television films from 1983: The Hound of Baskerville and The Sign of Four .
- Peter O'Toole spoke Sherlock Holmes in four animated films from the Netherlands in 1983.
- Jeremy Brett played Holmes from 1984 to 1994 in an English television series (of the British TV production company Granada ), initially alongside David Burke as Watson, and later alongside Edward Hardwicke . The forty-one part series also includes four longer films, including a film adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles .
- From 2000 to 2002, four Canadian television films were made, starring Matt Frewer (Sherlock Holmes) and Kenneth Welsh (Dr. Watson), directed by Rodney Gibbons . The films are Sherlock Holmes - Hound of the Baskervilles ( The Hound of the Baskervilles , 2000), Scandal in Bohemia ( The Royal Scandal , 2001), The Sign of Four ( The Sign of Four , 2001) and The Vampire Whitechapel ( The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire , 2002). Except for the latter film, these films are based on the original Conan Doyle stories, although the film adaptations are not true to the original, which is particularly true of the scandal in Bohemia . "The Vampire of Whitechapel" was invented and written by Gibbons.
- In 2002 Richard Roxburgh played Sherlock Holmes in a BBC remake of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Ian Hart played Dr. Watson.
- The British television series Sherlock has been running since 2010 , in which the crime stories of Conan Doyle were transferred to the present day. The British Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson. The fourth season was broadcast on the BBC in early 2017. Only a few episodes are based, interpreted very freely, on the stories and novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Other Sherlock Holmes actors (selection) for films and TV series with Sherlock Holmes that are not based on Doyle's original stories, e.g. B. Sherlock Holmes ' Personal Life , No Coke For Sherlock Holmes , Sherlock Holmes (2009) , Sherlock Holmes: Game In The Shadows (2011), Elementary : John Barrymore (1922), Clive Brook , Raymond Massey , Patrick Macnee ( John Steed ) , Stewart Granger , Rupert Everett , Fritz Odemar , Sir Christopher Lee , Robert Downey Jr. and Jonny Lee Miller . In 2015, Bill Condon released a film with Mr. Holmes based on the book A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin. An aged Sherlock Holmes is portrayed in the film adaptation by Ian McKellen .
Audio books and radio plays
English radio plays and audio books
Between 1933 and 1982 many of the stories were implemented as radio play; often with well-known speakers such as Leigh Lovell, Tom Conway , Nigel Bruce , Basil Rathbone , Carleton Hobbs, Norman Shelley.
Orson Welles worked on the radio play The Immortal Sherlock Holmes (author: William Gillette ), which aired on September 25, 1938 on CBS .
The classic British version are the radio play versions of the BBC from 1954 to 1955, spoken by Sir John Gielgud (Holmes) and Ralph Richardson (Watson) , in which Orson Welles also participated. The audio book versions with Douglas Wilmer as the narrator also became popular.
