history

Community merger

Herdwangen-Schönach is a municipality consisting of the two former Baden municipalities Herdwangen and Großschönach in the Pfullendorf district, and the Hohenzollern municipality of Oberndorf. In the Third Reich , the Baden district offices of Pfullendorf and Überlingen were merged to form the newly formed Überlingen district. With the district reform in Baden-Württemberg in 1973 , the three communities came to the Sigmaringen district. On July 1, 1974, as part of the community reform, the new community Herdwangen-Schönach was formed from the three communities Großschönach, Herdwangen and Oberndorf.

  • The chapel in the Oberndorf district was built in 1871 and shows the ceiling painting “Mary's visit to Elisabeth”.
  • In Heggelbach there is a chapel that dates back to the 14th century and probably arose from the castle of the Knights of Heggelbach.
  • The church of St. Eulogius in the Aftholderberg district was built in 1824 as a fortified church. The basis was the Gothic. The round vaulted ceiling with frescoes and two galleries with rustic painting testify to rural folk art. The location of the Eulogius Church on the European main watershed is a curiosity . One side of the roof drains to the Rhine and the other to the Danube .
  • The St. Wendelin chapel , built in the middle of the 11th century, and the St. Benedikt hermitage on the remains of Ramsberg Castle are on the neighboring Hattenweiler area , but are traditionally more closely connected with Großschönach. The Ramsberg has always been a place of pilgrimage and is part of the Way of St. James .
  • The Sebastian Chapel , built in 1894, is located in Mühlhausen and the Josef Chapel in Sohl .
  • The St. Sebastian Chapel from the 18th century can be found in the Schwende suburb
  • The former town hall of Großschönach was the seat of the municipality until it was incorporated in 1974. Since 2011 it has been an independent shared apartment with four residents of the Lautenbach community. For this purpose, the outside facade was renovated by the municipality. In front of the building there is a fountain with a stone portrait and a polygonal basin.
  • There used to be five mills at Herdwanger Hegelbach.
