Stéphane Degout (born June 9, 1975 ) is a French opera singer with a baritone voice .

Life

Degout grew up in Saint-Jean-de-Niost and then lived in Lyon until 1995 , where he completed his vocal training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon and was then accepted into the Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Lyon .

Stage roles

After his triumphant debut as Papageno at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence in 1999, invitations to almost all major opera houses in the western world soon followed - the Opéra National de Paris , the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Theater an der Wien , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Lyric Opera of Chicago , the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, as well as the Festival from Glyndebourne , Holland , Orange and Salzburg .

Degout has a relatively narrow repertoire, but has repeatedly been seen and heard in model productions by important directors and conductors - for example as Guglielmo in Patrice Chéreaus Così fan tutte ( Aix-en-Provence 2005), in the title role of Olivier Pys Hamlet ( Theater an der Wien 2012) or as Pelléas in Robert Wilson's Pelléas et Mélisande , a production that was developed for the Salzburg Festival in 1997 , but which the singer did not join until the 2010s. Degout also sings Monteverdi's L'Orfeo , two Rameau parts and the Oreste in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride , Mozart's Papageno, Guglielmo and Conte di Almaviva, the Oronte in Cherubini's Médée , the Raimbaud in Rossini's Le comte Ory and the Mercutio in Gounods Roméo et Juliette , Wolfram von Eschenbach in Wagner's Tannhäuser and Schaunard in Puccini's La Bohème . He also worked with Katie Mitchell , Joël Pommerat , Robert Wilson , Philippe Jordan and William Christie , among others .

A continuous collaboration connects the singer with the Theater an der Wien , where he first appeared in a guest performance by Chéreaus Così fan tutte in 2006 , returned as Orfeo in 2007 and sang Pelléas in a Laurent Pelly production (with Bertrand de Billy at the podium) in 2009 , Created Hamlet in 2012 and achieved great personal success in 2014 as Oreste in Iphigénie en Tauride .

As a concert singer

Degout regularly gives recitals in Paris, Montpellier, Brussels, London, Rome, Berlin, Amsterdam and New York. He sings regularly with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Riccardo Muti . Fauré's Requiem and Brahms' German Requiem are among the few choral orchestral works that Degout counts in his repertoire . However, he recorded the latter twice, once in a piano version and once in an orchestral version.

In 2011 he sang the title role in concert performance in Orlando paladino under René Jacobs (in Edinburgh and Brussels), in 2013 under Sir Colin Davis he sang Joseph in L'enfance du Christ (in Paris).
