history

Silk production in Suzhou

With over 2500 years of history, Suzhou is one of the oldest cities in the Yangtze River Basin. The area is the cradle of Wu culture ; the tribes that lived here during the Shang Dynasty called themselves "Guo Wu".

In 514 BC Chr. , During the "Spring and Autumn Period", Suzhou has been called "Great City of Helu" by the legendary King Helu of Wu established.

The name of the city dates back to 589 during the Sui Dynasty . Suzhou has always been a center of handicrafts and trade throughout the history of China . With the completion of the Imperial Canal as a trade route to the north, Suzhou experienced a particular boom.

Marco Polo said he visited the city in 1276 and found it great. Also known as the "silk capital" of the then Chinese Empire , Suzhou has been a leader in silk production since the 14th century .

Apart from brief periods of occupation by the Japanese during World War II and by the army of the Taiping Empire in the 19th century, Suzhou was not affected by the turmoil of the 19th and 20th centuries . Many historical systems have therefore been preserved in their original form. Since 1981 , Suzhou (along with Beijing , Hangzhou and Guilin ) has been included in the list of cities whose historical and cultural heritage should be given special protection.

Apart from silk , Suzhou is now a center of high-tech industry. Suzhou has been one of the Special Economic Zones since 1985 .

Since 1997, some of the parks have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List . In the approximately 14 square kilometer old town, buildings may not exceed a height of 24 meters. Skyscrapers and most of the apartment blocks are therefore located in newer districts such as the Suzhou New District or the Suzhou Industrial Park .
