history

Most of the villages in the Wittlicher Land come from the Franconian settlement period of the 6th to 8th centuries. Around the turn of the millennium one finds individual places owned by various monasteries and smaller feudal lords. In the area of Wittlich Land, the domains of the Archdiocese of Trier and the County of Luxembourg overlap , between which there were often armed conflicts due to mutual territorial claims. In 1146 the decision was made to ensure the continuity of the borders until the end of the old empire. The archbishop expanded the castles of Obermanderscheid and Neuerburg near Wittlich as state castles , which served him as border security against Luxembourg. After the archbishops of Trier had achieved the dignity of elector at the beginning of the 14th century, the Wittlich region fell into the area of four electoral offices: Wittlich, Manderscheid, Pfalzel and Bernkastel. The village of Dreis belonged to the Echternach Abbey .

The western part of the Wittlich Land with the rulership of Bruch belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg . This area included the communities of Bruch, Dierscheid, Gladbach, Greverath, Heidweiler, Heckenmünster and Niersbach. The community of Dodenburg was part of the Scharfbillig rule .

During the time of the French annexation from 1794 to 1814, most of the Wittlich land belonged to the Département de la Sarre , the rest to the Département des Forêts . Under Prussian administration, Wittlich formed its own district with several mayor's offices in the Trier administrative district of the Rhine province .

In 1970 the enlarged community was formed as part of an administrative reform from parts of the former community of Wittlich-Land, the community of Binsfeld and the community of Hetzerath.

economy

The economic structure of the Verbandsgemeinde Wittlich-Land, formerly characterized by agriculture, forestry and viticulture, has changed step by step in the direction of manufacturing, trade and services since the 1960s.

Commercial and industrial areas are identified and developed through the land use planning of the association community and corresponding development plans of the local communities. This takes place primarily in the local communities of Binsfeld, Hetzerath, Landscheid and Salmtal, which are identified in the regional spatial planning plan with the special function of "trade", in the " industrial park region Trier " and in the local communities of Dreis, Klausen, Osann-Monzel and Sehlem as part of in-house development.

traffic

Through the Eifel motorway ( A1 / 48 ) Koblenz - Trier can be reached Wittlich country from the northern Rhineland-Palatinate, the adjacent Köln-Bonn area and the Ruhr. Since 2003, the expanded A 60 has been providing a connection via Bitburg to Liège and Brussels . A network of state and district roads ensures local development. The Koblenz-Trier railway line has stations in Wittlich, Salmtal, Sehlem and Hetzerath. Regular buses in the Trier region round off the public transport network from the district town of Wittlich.

tourism

The community of Wittlich-Land is also known as the "Moseleifel" for tourism.

The Maare-Moselle cycle path was created on the former Daun - Lieser railway line with the continuation to Bernkastel-Kues . The Wittlicher Senke cycle path runs between Wittlich and Schweich through the area of the Verbandsgemeinde and the Salm cycle path runs along the Salm between Dreis and Klüsserath / Mosel. The community is connected to the supra-regional network of hiking trails through the Eifelsteig . This premium hiking trail leads from Himmerod through the Salmtal to Bruch and then through the Heckenland via Greverath to Kordel an der Kyll .
