Wickie, Slime & Paiper

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wickie, Slime and Paiper (WS&P, WSP) is the name of a book published in 1999 and radio and television broadcasts, CD publications and events based on it that deal nostalgically with terms, fads and fads that were popular in Austria during the 1970s and early 1980s Deal with products. WS&P is a registered trademark of the categories print media and other data carriers (e.g. CDs) and events .

The title is composed of the names of the hero of the animated series Wickie and the strong men , the joke article Slime and the ice cream variety Paiper by Eskimo , which enjoyed particularly great popularity in Austria in the 1970s.

The book and the programs triggered a kind of “nostalgia cult” throughout Austria, the pioneer for further 70s / 80s / 90s retro waves in Germany ( Generation Golf , “Alles Bonanza” , Ostalgie ) and already in the starting blocks all over the world.

Emergence

The forum

On November 18, 1997 at around 10 am, the Graz journalist Susanne Pauser (* 1968, today Pleisnitzer) founded the forum "30 year olds" in the online community BlackBox on the occasion of her own upcoming 30th birthday . Here Austrian "children of the seventies" are offered a platform to exchange their childhood memories and bring back things that have long been forgotten.

By May 15, 1999, this forum had received 12,700 messages. At the end of March 2006, 25,078 messages from December 5, 1998 to the current date are online .

Susanne Pauser:

“Countless childhood experiences are of course individual. But we all knew and loved Barbapapa, we all adored the tetrahedral Sunkist packs and we all carefully studied the novelties on the ice cream boards every spring. "

From 1998 on, “shared memories” are also collected. Digitized old sound snippets and title melodies from cassette or video, old songs that you rarely or never find anymore, pictures of yourself and of scanned advertisements are collected there. A list of 738 selected hits awaited an initially planned CD burning campaign.

Radio broadcast

As early as 1997, the forum developed the idea of a radio broadcast, which was immediately implemented. In the education program Ö1 -Radiocolg with the title Die 30-year-olds. The seventies from the frog's perspective by Susanne Pauser (concept) and Wolfgang Ritschl (* 1963, Ö1, moderation) will be talked to 30-year-olds in four episodes in late 1997 / early 1998 about sweets, toys, television and other things.

book

Employees of the Böhlau publishing house in Vienna listen to the radio broadcast and Eva Weisz suggests to Ms. Pauser to make a book out of it. Since the book cannot be realized without the forum community, the co-authors meet on November 25, 1998 in the Sargfabrik and study the original finds and the manuscript.

On March 3, 1999, Pauser and Ritschl presented the book “Wickie, Slime and Paiper. The online souvenir album for the children of the seventies ” . The presentation was celebrated in the Viennese rhiz bar with the Twinni ice cream , the Sunkist drink and music from the 1980s.

The book is a printed summary of entries from the Blackbox Forum and Chat, names numerous characteristic radio and television programs, products and fads from the youth of the now around 30-year-olds, advertising slogans and the artists and their hits that were then represented in Austria's hit parades . It was supplemented with comments, essays and pictures of what was discussed.

Within a short time, the book appeared in the non-fiction charts and took first place there for several weeks. On October 21, 1999, the editors were awarded the “Golden Book” for the non-fiction bestseller of the year.

The radio and television reporting was quite frequent due to the unusualness of the success, but also critical (e.g. May 20, 1999: ORF 2 Absolut Resetarits with the contributions: Wickie, Slime and Paiper - Really no longer from the 70s ? and Generation X - Welcome to the Seniors Club ).

At the beginning of 2000, Rowohlt-Verlag acquired the license rights for a paperback edition in Germany. A change of the title preferred by the publisher to "Wickie, Slime und Prilblumen " could be prevented.

What is iconic?

CD

Simply burning the 738 songs and sound snippets that were collected in the forum yourself would have been a legally problematic action and not feasible given the high level of awareness. Negotiating the rights for such an action alone would have been very difficult. Willi Schlager from Sony Music supported the project and a professional music CD was put together according to the wishes of the 30-year-olds and the legal possibilities. It was presented to the media on June 3, 1999 and was released in stores on June 8, 1999. The CD reached number 5 in the Austria Top 40 Sampler Charts .

In addition to music from the late 1970s and early 1980s, the CD contains bonus tracks as well as a number of “ Signations ” (Austrian pseudo-English for key melodies ) from Austrian radio and television programs and iconic commercials. As in the book, there were comments in the booklet for every title from the Blackbox chat. Sony set up its own website at www.wickie.at for this purpose. Blackbox also put a website for the community on the net with a link to the forum and pictures and reports on the meetings. (formerly: www.blackbox.net/wicke).

exhibition

The WS&P exhibition took place in the Imperial Furniture Collection between October 21, 1999 and March 12, 2000, with two extensions. Many showpieces from all areas of entertainment (music, records, star posters, series heroes, games, cuddly toys, game computers) were presented on 350 m² in thematic processing. Music boxes, pinball machines and tabletop computer games were available to the users. A film and TV program from a bygone era was played in a small cinema. In the summer of 2000 the exhibition then moved through the federal states.

Further development and marketing

Music CDs

At the end of 1999, a cover version of the theme song by Wickie and the Strong Men was released as Wickie 2000 . However, this was not received particularly enthusiastically by the majority of the audience addressed. Today you can find it on après-ski samplers.

The tremendous demand for a sequel and the long list of outstanding audio requests prompted those responsible to write a volume in November 1999 with the help of Radio Wien , Ö3 employees from the very beginning as well as the ZIB3 editorial team, ORF Enterprise (marketing company) and various record labels 2 release. The basis was again the wishes of the 30-year-olds, which this time Blackbox and Sony received. The link to the original forum was no longer given on this CD, but only to the Sony-Music website wickie.at. From then on there was a cooperation with ORF-Radio Wien, which also organized clubbing with hits from the 70s and 80s and more focused on this time in the radio program.

In January 2000, Volume 1 achieved gold status with over 25,000 copies sold, Volume 2 in spring and on May 6, 2000 the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2000 was presented for the best new compilation idea of the past year.

The desire for songs and contemporary documents that were often difficult to find did not cease and so in August 2000 Volume 3 was brought out in a tried and tested compilation. Radio Wien Clubbings were no longer mentioned, but the saying “We're playing the 70s. Radio Wien. ” The version “ We play the hits of the 70s, 80s and 90s still exists today . Radio Wien. ” , Which is used in a modified form by some private radio stations and in media criticism.

For television broadcast appears "CD for ORF TV show" ORF. In 2001 Volume 4 of the original series will be released. And in 2003 comes out again in keeping with the TV series, "Wickie, Slime and Paiper XL" , which also includes hits from the 90s.

Television broadcast

From August 10, 2000, the television program Wickie, Slime & Paiper was broadcast on ORF one for four weeks every Thursday night . A star who was around 30 hosted the show in a 1970s-style environment. Film clips, music videos, news snippets, excerpts from their own television program and old advertising clips were shown. The script for this is also from Susanne Pauser.

In 2002 there was a re- edition from October 17th under the name Wickie, Slime & Paiper XL . This time also moderated stars of the past such as the former " The Big 10 " presenter Udo Huber . 39 episodes had been broadcast by June 3, 2004. On December 9th, 2004 there was another special entitled All Years Again .

From 2000 to 2005, old films and series from the 1970s were increasingly played late at night. Children's programs such as Barbapapa were also shown again. Even the animal show Paradies der Tiere with the presenter Otto von Frisch, which has not been played for a long time, probably because of its less intense color intensity, was repeated as the first film in the morning children's program.

Cabaret reading

In 1999 and 2000 the multimedia, cabaret reading "Wickie, Slime & Paiper" took place in the Theater am Alsergrund based on an idea by cabaret artist Olivier Lendl as a co-production of the theater and Harald Havas Productions . Further performances were played on other stages in Vienna (such as the Spektakel and Theater Center Forum ) and in other places in Austria. The cast that changed several times included Hubert Wolf , and a number of Austrian cabaret artists such as Alf Poier , Severin Groebner and Mike Supancic had guest appearances in this nostalgic show.

Clubbing

On July 3rd, 1999 the first WS&P clubbing took place at the Rieglerhütte in Penzing . This open-air clubbing was followed by numerous other events, first in the Sofiensäle and after the major fire there (2001) until November 2004 in the Wiener Stadthalle . Such events were also held in Linz and Graz. Since November 2006 monthly WS&P clubbing has been taking place in the Fledermaus Cabaret in Vienna.

Supplementary books

In April 2000 , the original editors, together with Harald Havas , brought the supplementary book Faserschmeichler, Fönfrisuren und die Ölkrise to the TV broadcast on ORF . The picture book of the seventies out. ("The children of the seventies finally have their picture book." ( APA , April 2000))

In October 2000, the sequel followed with Neon, Pacman and the Yuppies. The picture book of the eighties by the same team of authors.

Other projects and implications

Other events, some of them by other organizers, have also joined the wave of nostalgia.

After the user meeting in the coffin factory to inspect the manuscript, there are always user meetings to hold conferences on old toys and artefacts, to celebrate barbecues at Greifenstein Castle, to organize an ABBA party or simply to enjoy chill-out + TV reception after the exhibition has opened .

From May 2000 the smaller “Paiper Pop Club” (Das A-Pop and NDW -Revival) toured the country, which was also supposed to promote the ice cream and was also organized by bco. The sixth and last, took place on November 4, 2000, Sofie's Bar in the Sofiensäle.

Universal released the CD Paiper Pop 2000 , on which current Austrian artists reinterpreted Austro classics from back then. The idea is from Rudi Nemeczek ( minisex ) among others . As expected, opinions were very divided. At least a second CD was planned. Around the date of publication, the Paiper Pop 2000 clubbing took place in the dairy in the city park .

Various events based on the WS&P clubbing took place in Vienna , for example the Radio Wien Paiper Night and the Paiper Club in Sofie's Bar. Similar clubbing was also held in other federal states, including Salzburg and the PaiperNight in Purkersdorf.

When the book was a success in Austria, Eva Weisz from the Böhlau Verlag in Vienna approached Anko Ankowitsch to implement the same concept in Germany. This resulted in the books Alles Bonanza (about the 70s, autumn 2000) and Es geht weiter (about the 80s, January 2002).

In September 2003 the Böhlau Verlag also brought out the nostalgia book about the long-standing radio show Car Drivers on the Road. Prominent speakers remember Lore Neumeier and Willi Schlager with his own record label delivers the right CD for it.

Eskimo petition

On the first day, already 1½ hours after the forum was founded, Heidrun Kirchweger mentioned the raspberry / lemon paiper for the first time. ( "Piper (that was the white ice cream with pink stripes in the plastic cup with the stick with which you had to push it up)" ) The mistake in the spelling persists for months through all kinds of documents.

Sabine Schweizer makes a statement in a radio interview and requests a petition to reintroduce the Paiper.

On March 7, 1999 morning at one o'clock posting Andreas Beer a link to the German Langnese Web page, where you'll see old ice charts and wants something even Eskimo. The next day, Susanne Pauser announced that the Paiper was being sold in Germany under the name “Ed v. Schleck ”and that Johannes Breit is preparing a petition (as a joke). He needs text suggestions and suggestions for other types of ice cream that should be inside. Within 3 hours it is clear that everyone wants something different and a vote is needed to determine the most popular former varieties.

On the afternoon of March 9, 1999 at 4:30 p.m. the petition goes online and the voting begins. Each signatory may choose 3 types and make a comment. The aim is to get Eskimo to reintroduce the three most popular childhood varieties. A party in summer to hand over the petition is already being considered. From the end of March there will also be an Excel list for offline entries for those without full internet access.

On March 30th, more than 900 people signed up for the list. After Ö3 mentions the petition (without specifying the URL), and almost a month after the book was presented, on April 30th there are already over 2000 signatures. At this point, Eskimo also informally announced that market research was already in progress.

The first paipers are spotted on the television show Absolut Resetarits on May 20th. It reports on the beginning hype, the book and the manual production of the paiper for market research purposes at Eskimo. The technical requirements are still being checked and it should be unofficially confirmed at the end of August whether the Paiper will be reintroduced.

The petition will be officially handed over to the Eskimo employees at the festival The Paiper Generation on July 3rd at the Rieglerhütte. A total of 4,540 people sign with an average age of 32 years. Ms. Lecker from Eskimo is also present at this, who has taken some paipers to taste them, which will be raffled among those present.
