The voiceless fricative alveolopalatale (a voiceless , alveolopalataler fricative ) has the following in different languages phonetic and orthographic realizations:

  • Mandarin Chinese ( Pinyin ): x .
    • Example (s): 西 xi
  • Conservative Cantonese ( Jyutping ): sh .
    • Example (s): 說 shyut3 (as opposed to 雪 syut3)
    • Note: Since the 1950s, most dictionaries have given up the distinction between c [tsʰ] and ch [tɕʰ], s [s] and sh [ɕ], z [ts] and zh [tɕ], but they still exist Speakers who clearly differentiate here.
  • Japanese : sh before / i / or with the following / j /
    • 死者 / sisja / = [ ɕiɕa ] "dead"
  • Polish : ś or si .
    • Example: ś nić (to dream)
  • Russian : щ
  • Swedish : k before front tongue vowel , kj , tj .
