The amateur league Schleswig-Holstein was played for the 13th time in the 1959/60 season and formed the substructure of the first-class Oberliga Nord until the 1962/63 season. The first two teams were allowed to take part in the promotion round to the first-class Oberliga Nord, the teams in the last three places had to relegate to the 2nd amateur league.

Compared to the 1958/59 season , the composition of the league changed as follows: VfB Lübeck was promoted to the Oberliga Nord, while no team from Schleswig-Holstein was relegated from the Oberliga Nord. The two relegated VfB Kiel (after eight years) and Rot-Weiß Moisling (after one year) had left the amateur league and were replaced by the three newly promoted Union-Teutonia Kiel (return after three years), Frisia Husum and Lübeck in 1876 (both for the first time in the amateur league).

Season course
As in the previous year, Heider SV secured the championship and thus participation in the promotion round. SV Friedrichsort was also allowed to take part in second place. Heide achieved promotion to the Oberliga Nord.
