The district of Bahraich is located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
The district is located in the North Indian Plain, 100 km northeast of Lucknow . In the north the district borders on Nepal . The Ghaghara forms the western boundary of the district. It extends over an area of 5237 km² (according to other information 4696.8 km²). The capital is Bahraich .
The population in the 2011 census was 3,487,731. In 2001 there were 2,381,072. The gender ratio was 892 women per 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 49.36% (58.34% among men, 39.18% among women). 65.71% of the population are followers of Hinduism , while 33.53% are Muslim .
