history

planning

The first design of the stadium from 2010 came from the Turkish architecture firm TOCA Mimarlik . At the beginning it was assumed that construction costs would amount to 300 million US dollars . Three years later, at the start of construction, a new stadium design was published by the South Korean architecture firm Heerim Architects and Planners . By 2013, the initially estimated costs more than doubled to 640 million US dollars. The planned opening date in 2014 had to be postponed to March 2015. According to the latest figures from September 2014, the construction costs amount to 710 million US dollars. The national stadium meets the requirements of the football associations FIFA and UEFA and is classified in UEFA stadium category 4 .

In the spacious area, the spectator stands are laid out on two levels. The main stand and the back straight have a third tier of spectators. On the grandstands in the stadium curves there is space for a third tier to expand capacity for possible Summer Olympics . The stands are covered by a with translucent ETFE - membrane -covered roof structure with a surface area of 38,000 m 2 . The stadium facade with 35,000 m 2 is clad with panels in the form of parallelograms that can be illuminated by LEDs and covered with ETFE membrane .

The National Stadium has a LED system from electronics manufacturer Daktronics , which has two HD - displays under the stadium roof and LED advertising boards includes. Each of the HD display boards is 10.97 meters high and 19.75 meters wide with a resolution of 720 × 1,296 pixels . An LED strip is installed at the front of the grandstand. With a length of 691.65 meters, it is 1.1 meters high. A 307 meter long and 73 centimeter high LED advertising banner is used on the edge of the field.

construction

The groundbreaking ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone at the Baku National Stadium were held on June 6th, 2011 by President İlham Əliyev in the presence of FIFA President Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini . The building site is located on the site of the former Bibi Heybat oil field on the southeastern bank of the Böyük-Şor Lake. Before the construction work could begin, toxic wastewater and remnants of oil production had to be pumped out. A total of 1,190,000 m 3 had to be disposed of.

The earthworks could not begin until November 2012, and in spring 2013 construction began with the foundation work . 1,720 piles were placed in the ground to stabilize the foundation. In August 2013, 2,200 workers with 300 construction machines , including nine tower cranes , were employed on the construction site . At this point in time, 90 percent of the earthworks (6.5 million m 3 ) had been completed. Of the planned 350,000 m 3 of concrete , 235,000 m 3 and 41,000 tons of reinforcing steel , out of a total of 52,500, were used.

The new building was worked alternately in day and night shifts, and in September 2013 the construction work was ahead of schedule. In early March 2015, the stadium was handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Sports as the owner of the sports facility by the construction company Tekfen İnşaat, on schedule.
