Balsièges is a French commune with 549 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Lozère department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Mende arrondissement , in the canton of Chirac .

geography

Balsièges is located in the Lot Valley , west of Mont Lozère , about 7 kilometers southwest of Mende . The hamlet of Changefège is located northwest of the town center on a plateau of the same name , the Causse de Changefège . The La Farelle homestead is north of the town center.

history

In the municipality there are traces of human presence from prehistoric times, dolmens on the Causse de Changefège and a burial ground near the mill of Balsièges. Traces of settlement from the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) were discovered 1200 meters from the Château de Choizal . Fragments of tombstones from the Middle Ages have been found at the La Farelle homestead . In the 13th century, the hamlet of Falisson belonged to the municipality of Balsièges, today it belongs to the municipality of Saint-Bauzile . The Seigneurie von Balsièges belonged to the diocese of Mende . The place has been a place of pilgrimage since the 14th century . A shrine dedicated to Saint Theodore (Tchaouzou, Chaousou) was located in a cave. The village was built around the castle of the Bishops built around, their location is controversial today. It was built around 1260 by order of Bishop Odilon de Mercoeur . In 1580 the castle was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars . The only building in the municipality that is officially classified as a monument historique is the dolmen on the Causse de Changefège .
